Set in Kansas and Missouri in 1926, this novel tells the story of 15-year-old Iris Baldwin. With her mother dead for 10 years, Iris feels unwanted and unloved by her no-nonsense father, feelings that are exacerbated when he unexpectedly sends her to rural Missouri to work as a companion for an elderly, invalid woman. Her new home offers its share of sometimes predictable surprises for Iris, who for a time feels torn between two worlds as a kind of hobo, a word—she learns—that means “homeward bound.” Though somewhat slow in its pacing and occasionally saccharine in tone, this first novel is really two stories in one that operate in sometimes uneasy and even anticlimactic parallel. Don't you love discovering a wonderful new author? I was so mesmerized by debut novelist Barbara Stuber's Crossing the Tracks that I just couldn't put it down, even when it was time for lunch, doing the laundry, or walking the dog. I fell in love with the main character, 15-year old Iris Baldwin; when the novel opens, it's 1926, and Iris' father, a shoe-store owner and widower who's soon to remarry, hires Iris out for the summer to be a companion to a country doctor's invalid mother in rural Missouri, far away from her only friend, Leroy. Iris, who narrates the novel, lost her mother when she was five, and isn't at all close to her father. He's going to Kansas City to open a new shoe store, and clearly doesn't want her along.

When Iris arrives at the Nesbitts, nothing is as she expects. Mrs. Nesbitt has fiery eyes, gold silk slippers, and a bamboo cane named Henry. Dr. Avery Nesbitt is as kind as can be, even saving an injured dog from the train tracks. Although Iris is wary of the Nesbitts' violent and abusive tenant farmer, Cecil Deets and his nasty 13-year old daughter, Dot, she begins to settle in to life at the Nesbitts, even helping Dr. Nesbitt out when he goes to deliver a neighbor's twins. The Nesbitts try to make her feel welcome and let her friend Leroy come to visit. During the course of the novel, their friendship develops in new and more romantic directions.

But suddenly tragedy strikes, and Iris' life is turned inside out. She is forced to confront the real meaning of family; is it the people related to you by blood, or the people who cherish and nurture you?

This tender, funny, and heartbreaking novel touches on many themes that will resonate with a teen audience: the meaning of home and family, love and loyalty, dealing with grief and loss, and facing domestic violence. Iris must deal with all these in the course of one summer. There is a suggestion of an incestuous relationship in the novel, although there are no graphic details, and because of that aspect I would recommend this book for middle school and above. There are several romantic scenes between Iris and Leroy, and these are also handled in a tasteful manner.

One part of this novel I particularly appreciated was how much the reader grows to care about not only our main character, Iris, but the minor characters as well, who are exceptionally well-drawn. We meet many of the people who populate the small town where the Nesbitts live, and come to know them well. These range from the adorable dog, Marie, to Mrs. Nesbitt and even the abusive Cecil Deets and his daughter.

Warning: have plenty of tissues on hand. This is a "3-hanky" read!

Crossing the Tracks has an authentic voice and a clever style, making the most of its truly engaging characters. A tale of healing through the gentle, caring presence of others, this story is both powerful and rich with detail. This is a rare find for the teen or young adult reader seeking both romance and substance. However, readers of all ages will relish Barb Stuber's portrayal of an era not so long ago - yet vastly different from today. The charm and subtleties of this story merit much thought and discussion. The general good feeling it provides is a rare pleasure. Don't miss meeting Iris Baldwin and the other "good folks" inside this cover!

I love this book!

Even though I am way, way past young adult, I loved this book. As a lifetime resident of Kansas City, with a father who lived in Atchison, Ks in the early part of the last century, I could visualize everything Ms. Stuber talked about. Some of my own ancestors were "farmed out" to earn money to help support the family. Their stories and Iris's stories bear distinct similarities. I love this book.

Stellar for an aviation buff, merely superb for everyone else.

George Kinbeck put the best stories from a couple of decades of military experience into one volume. Latin America, Southeast Asia, Alabama, and other places find their way into a collection from prosaic (house hunting at Ft. Carson Colorado) to hair raising (trying to find a landing zone in jungles of Panama when low on fuel, or inflight emergencies over Viet Nam).

Reading it is much like sitting to to hear your granddad's stories. Each chapter is a complete story, but all first hand experiences. And all are engaging and down to earth tales from three continents.

The stories are a little heavy on technical aspects of flying, but the view of life in Panama in the '40s and '50s or Viet Nam in the '60s is worth the patience to get through the nuts and bolts. If, on the other hand, you're an aviation fan, many of these stories are a window on more free-wheeling and less digitized days of flight. Some of the stories about now-extinct air frames like the UH-19 or CH-37 are historical gems, and will be treasured by future VTOL historians.

A great book, it was a real pleasure to be selected to review an early copy!

The first time I read "Tell Me A War Story",I wanted to learn more about
the highly decorated helicopter pilot who worked with the 11th Armored
Cavalry during the war in Vietnam.By the third time I read it,I found myself amazed that all these adventures,all over the world,in war time and in peace were had by one man.The success George experienced thru out his whole life is a testament to his character.Written in first person story form and loaded full with military facts and aviation techinal data,the stories pull you in and give you a feeling of a cross between sitting on the porch with grandpa reminiscing and a hands on flight class in the U.S.Army.All the time providing the perfect balance of "personal and profesional".True to his mission for writting the book,George's words inspire pride and honor for our nations military.The underlining message of "sacrifice of ones self to achive higher goals" is present in every story."Tell Me A War Story" is a book for everyone.From fans of aviation and military history,to people who just love rutting for the good guy
and seeing the hero prevail.I never got to meet George E. Kinback,Jr.
But I sure am glad I got to know him.

Bravery of Army Pilots in Peace and War

George's descriptions of his experiences throughout his military career makes the reader appreciate the daring and bravery of army aviators and helicopter pilots in both peace and war. In peace, he received awards for his aid in the flood relief efforts in Nicaragua. In war, his exploits in Vietnam earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Bronze Star medals. His exploits in Vietnam during an ambush by the Vietcong on an American convoy can be summed up by statements in his DFC award: "With total disregard for the withering hail of enemy fire, he continued to lead his attack.....through a murderous crossfire......" For a truly inspiring experience, this is a "must read."

Not Just "Preaching to the Choir"

Justice for Gays and Lesbians (Robert L. McCan, PhD) is a "must read" for any thinking American, especially one who defines himself as "Christian." In a reasoned, scholarly, yet highly approachable way, Dr. McCan reviews the historical context of Biblical pronouncements on same sex relationships; the positions of main-stream churches; and the very real struggle the Episcopal Church US went through for over 40 years before arriving at the vote to install an openly-gay Bishop. As I wrote the author: "To my continued shame, I watched the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's with bemusement rather than conviction. Similarly, as a straight, non-believer I hardly have a dog in this fight..." But, truth is, having watched friends and family members struggle with issues related to their sexuality, I do have one, and --- since you're reading this-- I suspect you do too. This book (with excellent, timely "on demand" production by a division of Amazon--so no need to look for it elsewhere at a lower price) deserves a readership far beyond those who accept or are indifferent to its conclusions before reading. Dr. McCan's review of the compassionate and sometimes revolutionary example Christ set should be a "wake up call" for all "Christians;" still, in the end this pastor/scholar leaves room for your position even if not totally in agreement with his.

What the Bible Really Says!

Justice for Gays and Lesbians is wonderfully accessible and useful rather than a "scholarly" dissertation or one-dimensional approach to the crisis and challenge facing mainline Protestant denominations in this country. This easy-reading book provides both clarity and comprehensive coverage of the issues involved when individuals and congregations wrestle over inclusion of gays and lesbians in church and society. Dr. McCan ably summarizes the long years of religious debate on this issue in mainline protestant churches and specifically highlights the Episcopalian odyssey. He addresses context and meaning when homosexuality is discussed in the Old and New Testaments. Dr. McCan provides a clear exposition of how Jesus burst on the scene of public ministry with a desire to redefine the ethic of Judaism. We can understand how absolutely radical Jesus was within both his Jewish community and larger community of his day.

Dr. McCan's wonderful and simple chapter on the "right and the good" in ethics, when combined with Jesus' love ethic, is applicable to our lives as citizens as well as Christians. The book lends itself to teen as well as adult education classes.

Glass, Color, Art in a Perfect Coffee Table Book

I saw the Dale Chihuly installation at the Dallas Arboretum and it changed my life. Always a lover of glass and color, to see his nature-inspired works was fun and moving. I immediately came home and ordered 2 of his books from Amazon. This one is beautifully done, excellent quality photos, and background on the artist. It is heavy, a perfect coffee table book and my guests have been enthralled with the photos. Buy this if you love art, color, glass and inspiration.

I find it interesting that Chihuly's art cannot really be appreciated in a widepsread way without truly spectacular photography OF his artworks. If you are lucky enough to see one of his creations in person or visit his 1 "retail" museum/ shop in Florida (or now his very own glass house in Seattle) then you realize how hard it is to capture his utterly unique visions with a camera. This book is just about perfect in this regard. You can see his intentions & get a good feeling for his creative process & the skill, time, energy, genius and wit that his exhibitions require. I'd like to chop up the pages & display them as posters...........Mmmmm, kinda pricey & I don;t believe in destroying books but it is tempting. I have a poster of his --the more exclusive prints etc are out of my price range--but I can afford & enjoy the books of his works. Also his calendars. I have other books of his but this one is simply wonderful -- bright, vivid colors & lush almost 3-D effects. Amazon also gave me a great price !

This is an absolutely beautiful book. The photographs show stunning, colorful displays of Dale Chihuly's Glass installations at many famous Gardens around the states.
