Good overview of IT Project Management

This book gives a good overview of the project management process in general with a focus on Information Technology projects. Though structured like a textbook (and obviously intended as one) the general reader, or someone studying for the PMP exam, could also benefit from the information in this text. Regardless, the book probably functions best as a course text (mostly due to the college textbook price). Each chapter includes definitions, discussion questions, exercises, and suggested readings. And a running case study that simulates real-world use of the principles introduced in each chapter pervades the book's 12 chapters. These cases help bring the material to life and animate the sometimes inevitably dry subject matter of project management.

The structure of the book follows the nine Project Management Knowledge Areas introduced in Chapter 1: Management of Scope, Time, Cost, Quality, Human Resources, Communications, Risk, and Procurement. Each knowledge area receives a detailed chapter of its own (which, in a few places, leads to repetition in the text). The emphasis here, understandably, remains on documentation of IT projects and meeting expectations of stakeholders or customers. Though each chapter briefly discusses the use of software tools for each Knowledge Area, and Appendix A introduces the basic functionality of Microsoft Project 2003.

Techies thinking of making the leap to Project Management will likely benefit most from the Cost and Comunication chapters (though all chapters contain useful information). Programmers and Architects don't typically engage in financial analysis, but Project Managers absolutely must know these money-based terms, tools, and techniques to do their jobs. Not only that, communication often gets taken for granted in IT shops (i.e., the "we have e-mail, what more do we need?" perspective). The book tries to undo some of the bad communication habits that at times seem endemic to IT departments. Human Resources can also provide challenges for coders coming out of their caves, and the chapter on HR covers motivational theories and the basics of dealing with other people on a day-to-day basis (something else Project Managers definitely must excel at). By the end of the book, the message rings out: Project Managers do need some technical skills to succeed, but communication and people skills rise far above in importance for successful management of Information Technology Projects. The book does a good job of delivering that message as well as distinguishing Project Management as a unique skill for IT.

IT workers may or may not agree with the author's somewhat opimistic outlook on outsourcing in chapter 12. More of the sunny side of outsourcing gets emphasized here. The subject remains controversial amongst many IT groups and companies, and the author doesn't seem to give a complete picture of the issue. But some readers may welcome the idea that outsourcing isn't a completely negative concept. Lastly, though the book's title page says "2006", the author doesn't talk about the recent growing trend of Project Management outsourcing for IT projects (some IT professionals may look upon Project Management as a shield against being outsourced; this may become less and less true if this trend grows; but it may not).

The book also includes 2 CDs. One includes a trial version of Microsoft Project 2003, and the other contains "Project Management Simulation Software". So it's possible to put to practice (temporarily, at least) the principles learned in this book in software tools.

Overall, the book presents a good overview of IT Project Management. Some of the more advanced topics, such as Six Sigma and Monte Carlo Analysis, receive cursory treatment due to their massive scope and terminology load. But the book gives good introductions to even complex Project Management principles and practices, and will likely inspire readers to prepare for the PMP exam or to examine futher this unique area of Information Technology Management.

Cheaper than the latest version, but still as informative.

I bought this textbook for my Informatics class for Project Management. Although, we were assigned the latest edition, this version was sufficient and A LOT cheaper. Anyways, I obtained the book and was able to memorize all the vocab that I needed. I felt that the only difference from this textbook from the newest one was that there were different examples.

I went to Fort Lewis, Washington to Vietnam . . .I survived with the Combat Engineers from Cam Rahn Bay, Quin Nhon, Phu Cat, to the Mekong Delta, Headquarters of the Combat Engineers. Moving up the Saigon River to Bong Song, Tay Ninh, South Vietnam.Keeping it simple, the army was good to me, after that, I worked as an alarm technician in L.A. Ca . . .I attended college for one year, worked for the city, state and federal government. The United States Postal Service as a clerk and letter carrier for ten years . . .Moreover, meeting people and working with all walks of life will make you take risks and make you try things that other people would not take in life. The papers in this book were written over 150 years ago, but it is very readable and still relevant. Written by a very knowledgeable scientist Maxwell gives his view of the relationship of mathematics and physics and how people come to understand abstract and foreign ideas. He also gives views on how the sciences and mathematics should be taught in schools. The book is a short read. I even learned that James Clerk Maxwell is a poet.

USEFUL!!

I had a different version of this book, but I can assume they are very similar.
The bulk of the book is just OK. There are some very, very useful tips in there, though, which I used on the SAT to help answer questions faster and guess more effectively.
However, the concept index at the end of the book was what made the book worth every penny. It has every SAT math concept mashed together. Studying a few of those a night helped me boost my math score tremendously.
The index won't help you nail those extra tough questions, but it will make sure you're well versed in all the concepts needed. Helped me score a 690(math) on my first SAT.

Kapan Math Worked Best

We tried and reviewed all the workbooks:Grubers, McGraw, Princeton, Barron. My two teenagers thought that Kaplan did the best job of preparing for the SAT.

However the practice tests in the book are not exactly like the real SAT. For that you need the Official SAT Study Guide.

Best SAT Math Review on the Market

I am a retired math teacher of 32 years, and now a math tutor. I like this book better than any other I have used for its content and ease of use. Problems are grouped in sections according to topic- algebra, geometry, trig, logic problems, etc. There is a very helpful review in the back with 100 facts that everyone taking the test should have mastered somewhere in their math courses. My students who have completed the book have all raised their scores anywhere from 30 to 100 points. I highly recommend it.

About the Author
Niall McLeod Waldman was born and educated in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1974, he immigrated with his family to North America. He is married with three grown children and one grandchild. As a long-time parent and homework-helper, he has struggled to answer his and other children's questions about why spelling is so complex. This book is his response to these never-ending inquiries.

Spelling Dearest is the author's first book. His lengthy association with literacy and simplified-spelling organizations, coupled with ten years of research, prepared him well for this subject. Niall is an active member of ALC (American Literacy Council) and SSS (Simplified Spelling Society).

The skillfully illustrated pen and ink sketches found throughout this book were created by the author. His artwork has been featured in many publications, and appears in public and private collections around the world.

Great managment techniques

Subalusky is right on target with his extremely well written book the Observant Eye. I too am a product of the nuclear submarine force and the nuclear industry and can tell you without any reservation that the observation techniques discussed in this book are the best skills a manager can use to truly know what's going on with his/her people. Bill Subalusky does an excellent job describing the benefits of and how to critically observe performance. He should know - he's an expert at it. I commend this book to any manager or management team seriously interested in improving performance. While the techniques can be useful in any industry, they are particularly applicable to complex businesses where human errors must be minimized to prevent serious consequences.

About the Author
Matt. Murray earned his BFA in film, television and radio production from NYU. A former president and the first executive director of NY's Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, he curated their popular "Saturday Morning" exhibit and crafted events and programming such as the year-long retrospective "1986: The Year That Changed Comics." He contributed to and was interviewed for the "I Smurf the Smurfs" documentary on The Smurfs Season 1, Volume 2 DVD and has served as the "Smurf Consultant" on Papercutz' series of Smurfs graphic novels. In addition to his Smurfology work, Murray is an actor, pop culture blogger and a collector of original comic, cartoon and animation artwork. He lives in Bethlehem, PA with his cat that is not named Azrael.

A wonderful overview of the Tiny Blue phenomenon known as the Smurfs!

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with a copy of Matt. Murray's excellent new book called The World of the Smurfs, A Celebration of Tiny Blue Proportions. This coffee table book published by Abrams (the same folks who brought us the wonderful Wacky Packages books) is unique in that it combines a beautifully illustrated look at the phenomena of the Smurfs with the styling of a scrapbook that includes replica mini posters, sticker sheets, replica animation cells and model sheets, as well as reproduction mini comics in the same style that the Smurfs were originally printed in the pages of Spirou in the 60s. I first stumbled across this style of book with the Star Wars Vault (published by Simon and Schuster) that came out during the 30th anniversary of the first film, and this Smurf volume follows in the steps of another Abrams scrapbook, The Transformers Vault, which hit bookshelves earlier in the year. Though these scrapbooks can evoke the feeling of reading a pop-up book at times, The World of the Smurfs strikes a nice balance between a book and a binder full of props. It's pretty darn cool to be able to pull out a replica animation cel while learning about the origins of the Hanna Barbera cartoon, or to unfold a detailed map of the Smurf village while reading up on some of the key characters in the universe. It makes the whole experience one hundred times more visceral than reading a straight prose history, or even a heavily illustrated one. For the generation of collectors that grew up in the 80s this style of publishing really taps into the nostalgia much in the same way that eBay and other auction sites have helped fans connect to ephemera from their past. Here Abrams does that legwork for you.

Though the actual book reads pretty fast, not dwelling on any one topic for very long, Murray, the self-proclaimed World's Leading Smurfologist, does a rather decent job of covering the history of the property and its creator without it feeling like a long wikipedia entry. Actually if there was one thing that I felt was a bit lacking was that after reading through the book I wished there was a bit more coverage of the merchandising. There are some very interesting images that show some of the various video games, food products and ephemera that aren't talked mentioned. I also wanted to see more of the PVC figurines that have been produced over the years. Even so, there are a lot of treasures to be found, in particular the artwork and pictures which dig a bit deeper than what you might find on the average fan site, illustrating the history with some personal photos culled from the Culliford family archive as well as the various Belgian publications that have most likely not seen print before in North America. Included is also a look into the making of the Smurfs' first foray into live action filmmaking which is set to hit theater screens later this month.

Overall, this volume is beautifully bound and presented and would make a great addition to the library of anyone who grew up during the 80s, in particular for casual fans of animation and the Smurfs property. Hardcore fans will still enjoy the book, though they might find it lacking as a reference for the toys, merchandising, cartoons or comics.

This is a must-have for smurfers!

I smurf this smurf! It has lots of smurf about the Smurfs' creation and success. But the smurf part is all the additional smurf it comes with in its pages: smurfers, mini smurfers, smurfs, even mini smurflets, some in clever cellophane smurfets. Every smurf was a surprise (and not the smurfing kind)! I agree with the other smurfewer that it should have more pages dedicated to smurf and smurf. I think there's not a simple smurf of the delicious Smurfberry cereal or the cookies that I smurfed as a smurf. Also a list of most Smurfs should have been smurfed, as a smurfologist the author should smurf all 100+ of them, right? Only major smurfs were smurfewed.
The only smurf I find is that too much smurf was dedicated to the new smurf. Since it is so smurf I think it was smurfy.
Anyway, buy this smurf. You won't smurf it!

Now for you non-Smurf speakers out there the English version:

I love this book! It has lots of information about the Smurfs' creation and success. But the best part is all the additional stuff it comes with in its pages: stickers, mini posters, cels, even mini booklets, some in clever cellophane pockets. Every page was a surprise (and not the exploding kind)! I agree with the other reviewer that it should have more pages dedicated to memorabilia and merchandise. Also a list of most Smurfs should have been included, as a smurfologist the author should know all 100+ of them, right? Only major characters were reviewed.
The only con I find is that too much space was dedicated to the new movie. Since it is so recent I think it was unnecessary.
Anyway, buy this book. You won't regret it!
