This book has everything. It's seductive, it's mysterious, it's sexy, it's heart-wrenching, it's breath-taking and adventurous. Everything you could want wrapped into one book. When I was reading it, I couldn't put the book down! I was drawn to the writing by it's twists and turns and enchanted by the characters and especially a love-story unlike any other. I would recommend this book to anyone.

"Circle of Tears" is captivating as it reveals the Spiritual Phenomenon of Elian Gonzalez. This is a book that is so well written that I was not able to put it down until it was finished. This information gives greater understanding about the circumstances that surrounded the Elian Gonzales event. The deep spiritual informatioon can be a real eye and heart opener for readers who are open to greater understanding of spiritual influence and significance. The author's style is not only captivating, but also causes the reader to consider various possibilities. Many different emotions are experienced as the pages are turned. I enjoyed this book as much as "The Camino" by Shirley Maclaine.

As an American living in South Florida, I just couldn't understand why one little boy was so important until I read this book. It was beautifully written and evoked every emotion from tears to laughter. It's a must to read.

Don't leave home without it

If you are having trouble sleeping don't pick this one up for a quick fix. Christopher's knowledge and wit will keep you engaged. I have a good many other books on alternative processes and this is my "Go to" volume. For those with an interest in historic processes, regardless of your skill level, this important text needs to be in your library. Neither the First nor Second editions have been anything other than first rate sources of information. My second edition is beginning to show the signs having a little too much chemistry spilled on it and I may have to get another as my breadth of knowledge and experience expands, thanks to Mr. James.

An amazing book

First a disclaimer. I helped on the cabon chapter and am the inventor of the Ziatype process, so I can hardly be called a neutral reviewer. However I do want to make a few comments.

Back in the late 70's another amazing book on this subject came out, Keepers of Light. It was an incredible achievement in its day but James's book exceeds it. Photo books come and go and only a tiny fraction ever get revised into a 2nd edition One would expect that after nearly 30 years the newer book having gone into a 2nd edition would be better, but this goes way beyond expectations. KOL was the spark that got me excited about process photography and to eventually start Bostick & Sullivan. I see this new book being a similar stimulus for young photographers to venture out into their own explorations of photography.

Christopher James should also be commended for not just producing a how-to book, but one that connects the modern day worker with the historical aspects of these processes. He covers the basic history of each process, which enlivens and adds to the fun of doing them. Did I say "fun?" Yeah, I did, and yes I know, we're supposed to be deadly serious about our art, but damn, this stuff is fun and you can't get away from that fact. That is also a theme that lies in the background throughout this book: art is fun.

Now this book is obviously targeted at the practicing photographer, but it deserves a much larger audience. Anyone interested in photography should read and have this book handy for a reference. Art and photo historians, collectors, curators, and folks that are just interested in photography will find their understanding of photography and photography's history enriched.

Perhaps now we will have fewer people making ink jet prints and calling them carbon prints. Ok, a personal peeve of mine. Sorry.

The best Alt Processes book ever

I have 2 well worn copies of the first edition of The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes - I have kept the book by my side while printing and teaching as not only a resource but an inspiration.

The second edition of the book is a bit heftier due to all the fabulous new chapters that have been added and still goes with me to my classes and studio. My students call it "The Bible" they use it not only for technical advice but to look at the work of many different Alternative Process artists. Seeing the variety of approaches to the medium of photography represented in this book has opened my students' minds to the idea of playfulness in image making.

Christopher James offers a wealth of technical knowledge in his book but not one ounce of it is presented in an intimidating way, each chapter opens up new possibilities for approaching the photographic image and creating unique, expressive and playful creations.

The final chapter, "Light Marking", is new to the Second Edition and is a wonderful tool for photography instructors (and anyone else who wants to discover a new approach to an often highly technical medium). It gives many suggestions and clues on how to use the spirit of play as a tool for teaching/learning.

If my review has not convinced you to check out a copy of the book then just look at the cover image... A dog balancing on a ball, how can you resist!

A novel of rich imagination

This is a coming of age novel, but that is only the foundation. It escalates to dizzying genre bending heights. It is a unique work, occupying many dimensions. Ultimately, it becomes an exploration of every aspect of religion and theology that is complex,ecstatic and mind-boggling. There are many pleasures along the way.There are gourmet recipes scattered throughout, exotic and mouthwatering ( the protagonist is a brilliant chef). There is a gritty portrayal of the London underworld,with the seamy flavor of authenticity. The landscapes of rural England come alive with an aching beauty and charm. In addition to the searching protagonist, the minor characters are a colorful, rather Dickensian lot. Fascinating book.

A karmic ride

Rolling between different states of its protagonist's mind, The Man, The Myth & The Motorcar gives us menus and mystery, spirituality and strangeness, romance and ruminations. At the book's beginning, Daryl is an awkward teen, but don't expect anything less than a deep ramble through this complex kid's mind as he takes us on his intriguing adventures.

The vehicle for would-be chef Daryl's journey is haute cuisine, which carries him, geographically, from Denver to LA, from LA to England. All in pursuit of the main meat and veg of the story: the mystery of his origins, and his connection to a rare Rolls Royce Silver Cloud, all of which comes to him in dreams and flashbacks whose trail he follows through London, Hampshire to Devon. Interwoven throughout is his compelling relationship with Cindy, who rides alongside for much of the way, either in his head, or literally.

At first I felt the detailed recipes in the book were a bit irrelevant (though tempting) and wondered about the whole culinary aspect, until I began to see both as a metaphor for the way author Crispin Kitto (himself a gourmet chef) blends the disparate pieces of Daryl's life into a fascinating concoction quite unlike any I've read before. Slightly unsettling to me were flips from third into second person narrative - but unsettling, I suspect, is the author's intention; in a sense mixing up literary convention and playing with new forms. That said, I found much of this book to be beautifully written, and the author's insights into the workings of a psyche, revealed through Daryl's fluid and clearly well-read perspective, are fascinating. I'd like to bet Mr. K's platters are as tasty and interesting as his book.

Partly autobiographical the author explores human relationships, cooking, religion, philosophy, the mores of differing national groups etc., with his own very unusual and original takes on all.

In this book Crispin Kitto exposes us to his own extremely curious and innovative mind.

It is with great interest that I am waiting impatiently for his pending third volume.

About the Author
Sally O. Lee earned her BA in Studio Art and Art History (with distinction) from Colby College and then went on to study graphic design and painting in Boston (Art Institute of Boston) and in New York City (New York Studio School). She has had several shows of her work and received an art grant from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology to conceive and create a series of paintings, and from this came her 2002 exhibition- A Journey Into Abstraction. Some of Ms. Lee’s paintings are in various private collections in the US. In recent years, Ms. Lee has begun to write and illustrate children’s books. Some of them deal with the struggles of living with some form of handicap…or, as the author prefers to call it, imperfection. Many of her illustrations have been published and she has earned both academic and public recognition for her important work in children’s books. She has had illustrations published in Worldlink Magazine, IEEE Magazine, and several other publications. Sally lives and works in Massachusetts. Sally Lee writes "My children's books are an extension of my work as a painter. Writing is a new addition for me but I am enjoying it very much. And creating the illustrations is a perfect way to continue my painting in a new direction and a nice way to complement my writing. I hope to write and illustrate many more".

Incredibly simple story with bright pictures that are sure to open any tiny child's eyes, this book is perfect for a quick read when you don't have a lot of time but still want to get a story in. Very enlightening about the Nazis and other things that happened after World War 2. People who believe the Bible will have a better understanding of spiritual conditions of our day if they read this.
