Fun Read

Emma Proctor is a high school senior in "Nowhere, Middle America", as she calls it, and she hates it. Her goal in life is to get a track scholarship to an out of town college and a one way ticket out of Wheaton. Things seem to be going according to plan until something starts happening to the popular girls at TES, the private school she attends. Now, Emma doesn't know exactly what is going on but she does know how it started - and she knows people are lying. The only thing is, if she comes forward and tells what she knows, she could be kicked out of school and her dreams for the scholarship and life outside of Wheaton go down the tubes. How long will she be able to stand by and watch as one-by-one the "losers" of the school are plucked out and blamed for things she know they didn't do? Will she do the right thing or will she take the safe route to ensure her plans aren't jeopardized?

Eileen Cook has created characters that are relatable and believable - she totally nailed teenage angst. What Would Emma Do? is a smart and funny book that had me laughing out loud. I couldn't put it down. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, easy read - regardless of one's age.

It began when Emma kissed her friend Colin right in front of Santa at the Fort Wayne Mall. Since Colin was Joann's boyfriend and Joann was Emma's bff the kiss violated Girlfriend Rule #1. Senior year at Trinity Evangelical Secondary in very small town Wheaton becomes a difficult journey of self discovery for Emma. Cook's insights into Senior Year life, love, faith and friendship will be familiar to anyone who has ever experienced 'Senioritis'. Emma prays for a miracle cure. She learns that instead or trying to please and pacify those around her she must figure out what she wants for herself and how to feel good about herself as she tries to fulfill those wants.

Emma has a bit of a problem. Her best friend isn't speaking to her. In fact, neither of them are and both for the same reason. See, one of her best friends is JoAnn and the other is Collin. Collin and JoAnn are dating and Emma and Collin might have shared a small kiss at Christmastime. That kiss also might have been in front of JoAnn's mother.

So, as you can see Emma has is in a bit of a dilemma. To make matters worse, she isn't sure how she feels about Collin and he seems to be showing signs of taking their relationship further, no matter what JoAnn feels.

Also, there is another guy who seems to be showing feelings for Emma and the popular girls at the school are suddenly becoming very sick. The town seems to think that it is a terrorist conspiracy and the new boy might somehow be involved.

Will Emma be able to solve the mystery of what is happening to the popular girls without ruining her chances at love and a track scholarship?

I have to say that I just couldn't get into this book. It started out at a good pace but after that things got slow. Also, the romance of the book never seem to take off. It seemed to get started and then just stop. It wasn't resolved at the end and that is one of the worst things to do, in my opinion.

The characters in this story also seemed to be underdeveloped. Emma was a good character but you are kind of left guessing about her relationships with the other characters. Also, some of them just really pissed me off. =]

The story was good and the book was cute, I just felt it could have been so much better. The end just really left me unsatisfied and maybe if there is a sequel I would be happier with this story. I would still recommend it for a cute summer read but if you are looking for something with substance, this isn't it.

Ok, good information

If your looking for a book that will give you clear direction, and will tell you how to be a better father I feel that this is not that book series. But if you are looking for a book that will provide some insight to your life as to where you are as a father and what God intended you to be as a father, or possibly how you became the father you are today then this is a good book for you. If clearly gives you the steps to manhood, and what we are supposed to be as male fathers to our children but lacks direction if you are not where you should be. I felt that is is only half the story and it gives you the location of where you are but fails to help navigate the way to where you should be. In all fairness John Eldridge states this at the beginning of the book though, but even with that said I feel that there just could be more.

Sometimes hard to understand but it is a good topic for a bible study.

I am the father of Pg-chan and a retired police officer. I enlisted in the US Army in March of 1969. I trained as a Military Policeman and arrived at the 90th Replacement Depot in South Vietnam and from there to the 25th Infantry Division in January of 1970. I extended my tour twice and left Vietnam in March of 1972, having spent two years instead of the usual one year tour. It was around the end of 1970 or the beginning of 1971 while I was stationed at Camp Frenzell-Jones next to Long Binh that I met the oldest child, of ten children, of Lt. Col. Nguyen Van Ban of the Army of South Vietnam. She was 18 and had recently graduated from Catholic School in a Convent and was working for us in security when I met her. I spent my last five months in-country stationed in Saigon. The relatively new procedure for getting married to a foreign national was to get her a 90-day visa and, after you left Vietnam, she got a passport and went to the US where you were married and she applied for permanent residence. To get a passport she had to have her parents' permission and her father finally did sign for her. We were married in September 1972 and were married for nearly 33 years before she died. She went back to Vietnam for a month for a visit in 1974, which she wanted to do before we had children. Her father, who we thought had been killed in the fighting in March 1975 had actually been captured by the NVA and spent the next six years in a "Re-education Camp" (Concentration Camp) where, as he told me, "If a guard wanted to kill you he just killed you." After six years he was released and made his way back home. My wife, who was a very resourceful person, managed to send money via a convoluted process to her mother for 15 years. And, on December 13, 1990 seventeen in-laws (my father-in-law, mother-in-law, and my wife's brothers and sisters and their spouses and children arrived in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The Catholic Relief Organization played an important role in making this possible. One sister with three children had managed to get out of Vietnam on a boat several years earlier and was in a refugee camp in Indonesia for four years before being allowed to go to the US. One sister with her family had been left behind in Vietnam. Young GIs went to Vietnam knowing absolutely nothing. In addition to a long marriage to an educated woman and a lot of reading, this book has filled in a lot of blanks in my knowledge of the entire situation. I recommend it to anybody who is interested in knowing the story beyond the soldiers’ experience. The culture, the politics, the people.

Independence for All?

Certainly worth reading if for no other reason than to appreciate the viewpoint of those we fought against for so long! Their battle for independance was similar to ours in the struggle to self-goven this country from that of Britain! We, in all our wisdom (?), and ulterior motives, could not or would not allow our government to believe that a few upstart revolutionaries should dissuade us from formulating our version of foreign policy in East Asia!
We sacrificed 58,000 American lives to make our point and for what purpose? How many did they sacrifice in order to bring about their independance? We are NOT always right in the eyes of the world; maybe it's time for us to review our own republic and what it stands for! Tate

A MUST READ.

I would recommend this book to all, especially to those who served in the jungles of Vietnam. It is a well written and very insightful look at the
Viet Cong leadership structure and how they thought and processed their position of war. It even explains how they lived, survived & died in the jungles and swamps of South Vietnam. It definately opened my eyes as to how & why we lost this war. I am not sympathizing with them or their effort. Had we allowed our U.S. forces to "fight to win" I truly believe we would have won this war easily but our politicians with their policies and bleeding heart liberal citizens denied our soldiers any chance to win. In the end, South Vietnam lost anyway. The very communist North Vietnam took control and reined terror down on the heads of the South Vietnam citizens.

Great Study - well formatted for a small group

My small group (4 women total) found this book and have been using it for our weekly small group. Bobbie Wolgemuth is a gifted and honest/real writer. Nothing 'flowery', she just asks the good questions and tells things like they are.
The study is 7 weeks and the subjects are:
First Things First: A Mom's Priorities
Praying for Our Kids
Being Obedient - and Teaching Obedience
Discipline: Do the Right Thing
Growing Christlike Character
You've Got a Friend
Launching Our Kids Toward Their God-given Dreams

The study is formatted in a way so that you're not just re-hashing the questions you answered when you meet to discuss. There are 5 'Mom Time' lessons to do for each chapter. They usually have 4-6 questions, include looking up and reading scripture passages, and end with a prayer. At the end of each chapter is then a group section - 'Lean on me: Learning from One Another'. This section contains 5-6 questions to discuss with subjects from the lessons you did during the week. There is also a 'Bringing it Home' section that gives some insightful ideas for how you might put this week's lesson into practice in your home. There is a Lean on Him: Learning to Trust God section that closes each session that includes prayer and praying for each other. There is also a Review of the 5 lessons from that week and a simple family project following the lesson as well.

Overall, this is a great study! The women and I all have children under 2, so some of the questions and applications don't quite apply yet, but we've still have very good conversations around these topics and will appreciate the advice later down the road. I'd highly recommend this study to women seeking to challenge themselves to be better wives and mothers - and most importantly, children of our one true God.

Such a great study!

I had ordered this from Amazon in 2010 and got it within a couple days...loved the price!

I absolutely loved this Bible study! My best friend and I were first-time mom's and were looking for a Bible study that she and I could do together and I am so glad I came across this study.

It's very in depth and scripture focused/based...keeps you interested and really grows you spiritually in so many ways...not just as a mom! What I also really like is that,while there were a few things that I could not connect to 100% when I first did the study (because my daughter was a baby and some questions were directed to mom's of older children)- it seems to be fitting to mom's of children of all ages and in any stage of their walk with God. I would actually recommend this to Women who aren't even ready to have children yet. It gives great insight into what God calls women to do/be as mothers. Really helpful on how to approach/handle certain situations...but most importantly put God first in everything.

Since it seems fitting for mom's of all age groups-- it is a study you can do over and over again over time. It will help you continue to grow over time....being a mom has it's own stages as our children grow and bring us new challenges and experiences :)

It is very easy to read. The meaning of the text is not lost in this translation.

I have recently being doing my bible studies in a bible called Mom's Bible: God's Wisdom for Mothers. Traditionally I have used a NIV version of the bible. This particular bible is in the New Century Version. There is a difference is the text. The NIV is definitely not written in modern language. The New Century is written with modern words and language. It is very easy to read. The meaning of the text is not lost in this translation. In the introduction it mentions that the authors of the New Century Version worked off of the original Greek and Hebrew text.

The Mom's Bible has great features.

*There is a feature called Insights. They are text boxes scattered throughout the bible. They really help you apply the passages they feature to your everyday life.

*There is a feature called Wonderful Counselor that has insight from Christian therapist on tough issues. I really loved the essay on How to Be a Good Mother When You Weren't Mothered Well. It is linked to Isaiah 41:10: "So don't worry, because I am with you. Don't be afraid, because I am your God. I will make you strong and will help you; I will support you with my right hand that saves you."

*There is a feature called Our God Is that works on building your knowledge of God.

*There is a feature called Walk In that looks at having balance in your life.

*There is a feature called Moms in the Bible that helps you sharpen your understanding of your role as a mother.

*There is a feature called Passing It On that helps with you principles you want to teach your children.

There is so much to this bible.
If you have a busy mom who loves the Lord, this would be a great book to have.

If you need a complete hands on learning view of Dreamweaver 8 this is the one...

I spent a week reviewing books for my upcoming web design class.
I was torn between two books.

This was the first and the other was "Dreamweaver 8 Hands on Training" by Lynda.com folks.

What sold me on this book is the fact that it is a complete tool. It provides information in a straightforward manner on how design web pages from start to finish.

It even had a small section on how to plan a web site and correlated that concept in the context of Dreamweaver by showing you how to create a sitemap.

This book flows like silk. It will make an excellent reference for the future as well.

I was very impressed. My students may not even need my help when covering Dreamweaver 8.

The only disavantage of this book over "Dreamweaver 8 Hands on training" is that it is not in color and some topics such as colors and graphic use are omitted.

Because of the broad spectrum that is covered within the context of Dreamweaver using this book and how well it flowed, I decided to get this book.

I highly recommend it!

Great content! Poor design

This book is a continuation of The Web Collection Revealed (deluxe education edition), and it is unfortunate that they didn't follow the layout (color) and design of that book through to this one. I opened the book and broke the binding right away. I tried to do the book break in tricks that I learned in elementary school - didn't help because I broke it again. A postive thing is that you can download the files from the website that go along with the exercises. However, due to this not being an education version the assignments weren't continued on with chapter 7 and up.

I would recommend this book, because it has great hands-on exercises and the content is great. The quality of the book just needs to be improved.

When I 1st started using Dreamweaver I tried this book out. A little on the dry side- but got the job done. I was impressed how much I learned in a little time. The problem with this book is that the website where you are supposed to DL the files from no longer supports this version. So steer clear of this book and buy the CS4 one instead. I do not know how you can sell a book and eliminate the files that you are supposed to DL for your site. But sadly this is the case. I would give it one more star if you can find someone that has the files stored somewhere. But I would take one star away for the true beginner that does not know how to recreate what the book shows.

About the Author

Bernard Lebrun is a war correspondent who has reported from Iraq, the former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia. He is the author of Normandie 44. Michel Lefebvre is a journalist for Le Monde and has written extensively on Robert Capa, 1930s photography, and the International Brigades.

If you love the work of Capa and have an interest in this period of history than this is the real deal. There are a lot of photographs that cannot readily be found elsewhere.
