Same book as Kaplan SAT 2400. Slightly useful.

This textbook is EXACTLY the same book as that published by Kaplan with the title "Kaplan SAT 2400." Very strangely, the two books have different prices. Also odd: the 7th edition of that title is identical to the 2nd edition of this one.
As an SAT test prep tutor, I purchased this textbook in search of something challenging for my top students. What I've found is that the text has some value, though probably not as one's primary SAT prep guide. For that, I recommend "The Official SAT Study Guide, 2nd edition" from the College Board, blue book of past tests; since you can't get more real than the real ones (although the first three tests in that book are significantly more recent and subtly harder than the latter ones). "Tutor Ted's SAT Solutions Manual" is a great companion to that book, making it into a text, in effect, by giving detailed explanations for every question on those ten practice tests.
The Kaplan workbook does teach some techniques, although the highlighted tips are very annoying: Each one starts with the phrase, "An Advanced test taker ...." Yeah, we get it, already; an Advanced test taker does it the Kaplan way. Many of the tips are redundant and condescending. For example, in the lesson on types of questions in Critical Reading, the tip for EXCEPT/NOT questions is: "An Advanced test taker doesn't make careless mistakes on EXCEPT/NOT questions." That tip, like many in the book, is not worth a lot. For students seeking strong, basic strategies and test techniques, The Princeton Review's "Cracking the SAT" is better. For the Math section, go to Barron's separate "SAT Math Workbook."
What the Kaplan book does offer, is a collection of generally harder questions. Some of the questions are harder because they aren't well written, with answer choices that are faulty in one way or another - either the correct answer is not definitively supported by the text, or a wrong answer is equally legitimate. Some of the questions and passages feel awkward, not up to SAT standards. This would not be a good book to use without also experiencing the actual SAT questions since it not representative of the actual test. For high scoring students who want an extra resource, though, it is useful, and much better than "Barron's SAT 2400."

tough but excellent

This workbook is the exact one I was looking for for my daughter's SAT preparation. It contains effective math tactics including the 100 essential math concepts my daughter needs to know for test day, powerful critical reading strategies, step-by-step techniques for writing a high-scoring essay, and the toughest practice questions to build test speed and accuracy. It is comprised exclusively of the toughest material on the SAT and the strategies designed for cracking the tough stuff. The habits and thought processes of top test takers are highlighted throughout the book, as are favorite strategy tips. This book helped my daughter to master the questions that most people get wrong on the exam. My daughter likes this book very much. When she participates Beestar online SAT tests, she is ranked high in the honor roll. The Beestar ranking and statistics really help us understand the student's level. I'm very pleased with this book. Highly recommend.
