About the Author
Rick Daniels, R.N., Col. (ret.), Ph.D., administers clinical practicum courses in acute and critical care nursing. Currently an associate professor at Oregon Health and Science University, School of Nursing, Daniels has taught nursing in associate, baccalaureate, and graduate schools, as well as R.N. degree completion programs. He has also taught many adult health and illness seminars and has presented at numerous national organizations, including forums for nurse educators. Throughout his accomplished career as an educator, Daniels has kept his clinical practice current as a Colonel in the United States Army, Army Reserves, and National Guard, retiring in August 2012 after 28 years of service. An active researcher, Daniels has received four successive fundings with the Department of the Army to implement health promotion programs with National Guardsmen. The author of multiple textbooks, he also publishes in nursing journals and holds membership in numerous professional nursing organizations, including Sigma Theta Tau and the American Nurses Association. Daniels obtained his bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Oregon Nursing School, his master of science degree in nursing from the University of San Diego, and his doctor of philosophy degree in nursing from the University of Texas in Austin.

Waste of time & money

This book was mandatory for my nursing program. This book is awful. Such a waste of time & effort to find simple things (and who has that to waste when you are in school?) None of my classmates have anything good to say about it either.

When someone utters the phrase, 'Stop and smell the roses,' it conjures up a mental image of two possible personality types: one that has been run ragged by the fast pace of modern society, and just needs a break or some stress-relief; and one that has sniffed the roses, but wants to know the deeper meaning of why one should do this.  This guide is intended for those of you, who, like both the smeller of roses and the runner of rat races, seek a larger, more beautiful understanding of the magnitude of existence, among other things.

From the Author, Dan L Dudgeon
I originally wrote this Guide in 1996 for two different reasons: one, a 'survival guide' was a format that I felt best encapsulated what I needed to express to others; and two, as an answer to what I perceived as an ongoing theme of total confusion in the world of metaphysics and spiritual enlightenment.  In the recent past, numerous authors, filmmakers, and self-entitled New Age gurus had created an enormous realm of half-truths and almost-answers, toppling over onto a base of subliminal religious fundamentalism.  This situation created in me a sense of anger and distress, not only because of the unbridled lack of responsibility by these persons, but because of the fact that I could personally see through all the hype and confusion, yet had no channel through which to pass along my own wisdom.  So, I grabbed a pen and paper and didn't stop until I had what I considered to be a complete work.

It has taken me ten years to publish because I have had to work for a living, and editing and refining a text of this size requires time and mental dedication, resources which I have not had in abundance.  However, due to what I have witnessed more recently as an urgent need for clarity, I have finalized and published my guide.

Now I present to you The Psychosomatic Survival Guide.  I enjoyed writing it, and I hope you enjoy reading, and maybe get a little light of understanding in the process.

Winding and spiraling--but it gets you there.

I love the way this book is broken down--er, sorta--into sections relating to exploration, business, love & relationships, and so on. The narrative is almost in parable style, and dives into story inside of story inside of story. You can get lost at times, but just keep reading.

I did have knee-jerk responses to the very simple style of writing, in that the messages which are meant to be masked within the stories still seem a bit heavy-handed. At times I almost wished that the author had simply written a how-to--but in nearly every case, I found myself smiling when the story played out. So I liked it after all, and probably appreciated the connection with the stories as the carriers of the message better than I would have a "here's what I think" version.

And naturally, it's one of those books that if I was taken away from it for days or weeks, when I returned, it was exactly at the story I needed to hear. I might give it to some friends...

About the Author
Dean E. Walker is a professional Engineer. He graduated from Norwich University in Northfield Vermont in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering.While studying at the University he was shown how to compute the effects of gravity?s force. But, he was also told that no one knew what causes gravity?s force. That thought never left him and he grappled with the solution of the cause of gravity ever since then. He could not leave it alone until he had read and studied everything about it and thought it out and solved the mysteries of gravity?s cause. He offers his book True Gravity and the Blueprint of the Universe as proof of gravity?s cause.

I was hoping for some fresh ideas about gravity, but what I got was a shipment of broken pottery. The author's theory is that gravity is not from mass attracting mass, but is rather created by a rotating rain of "subatomic particles" that is radiated outward in expanding shells from the nuclear reactions inside stars, without which there would be no gravity in the universe.

With each shell pushing the shell in front of it, and as the shells are pushed out, they thin and slow down. A mechanical explanation of gravity by a mechanical engineer. Each star radiates out "True Gravity" which strikes the planets and other matter and they radiate out or reflect "True Gravity" and thus generate their own gravity. The "True Gravity" shells rotate at orbital speeds for their distance from the gravity source. Satellites in stable orbits are moving in step with the "True Gravity" shell. According to this theory other stable orbits are impossible. "Orbits of satellites traveling into the oncoming gravity field can't be maintained as they lose speed and keep dropping into lower orbits." (P. 9) Apparently the author has never heard of retrograde orbits or polar orbits and they are just as stable, Halley's comet has a retrograde orbit.

The author also believes that objects orbiting in a strong "True gravity" shell close to the source, lose rotation due to a bow wave effect with the shell. "...lack of rotational speed of the closer Planets and moons . . . They stretch the source's field . . . it slows their own rotating speed or it even stops their rotational altogether." (P. 13) Of course what is the real reason for the lack of rotation seen in such cases due is the gravity tide effect as with our moon, the closer side bulges slightly making the moon like an egg with the fat end pointing towards the earth. For flexible bodies this induces tidal heating as the body is flexed as it spins, this constant flexing induces a resistance like friction that gradually slows the rotation as is happening to our earth. In the case of the moon, this 'friction' has stopped the rotation and the bulge is 'frozen in place' and the moon is stuck with one side always facing the earth.

Another idea the author has is that an object's spinning increases it's gravity creating "Super-gravity". Of course this effect has never been detected and if it were true would result in a large weight gain when a large mass was spin at high speed such as in large generators, motors and flywheels.

The author attempts to negate results of the Michelson-Morley experiment which disproved the existence of any type of background ether in the universe by showing that light moved at the same speed regardless of direction, and since the earth is moving, movement across the ether should have caused noticeable variation in the speed of light in different directions. The author's explanation is that the earth reradiates what it receives from the sun, creating it's own field that moves with the earth. The problem is that the author's shells of "True Gravity" are supposed to rotate at orbital velocities and orbital velocity at the earth's surface would be five miles per second or 18,000 MPH. You could subtract off nearly 1,000 MPH for the earth's rotational speed, but that would still leave the ether field of the earth's "True Gravity" shell moving eastward at 17,000 MPH, which would have been observed in the Michelson-Morley experiment. Tough having your pet theories disproved a hundred years before you even picked up a pen to write them. The author also failed to consider that if moving in step with the "True Gravity" shell would put you in a stable orbit, that at the poles one would only have to slowly rotate at the rate of once a day and you would be weightless, turning faster would launch you into space. If the author is able to do this, I will of course retract my review.

"When a sink is drained the falling water is whirled around and outward against the vertical drainage pipe by gravity. When a toilet is flushed . . . caused by the same force. . . . All of these examples rotate counter-clockwise int the Northern hemisphere of the world and clockwise in the southern Hemisphere."(P. 16) I checked in my bathroom, the toilet went CCW and the sink was CW, which is to be expected since the direction of rotation is random or influenced by other effects, since the time to drain is far too short for the Coriolis effect to be a factor and scale of movement too small. Since such an effect is required by the author's theory, my sink, be it ever so humble, was able to disprove the "True Gravity" theory, not bad for a sink that never went to school.

This book also only has about 78 pages, including 10 full page pictures of the planets with a full page title page opposite each picture. (78 - 20 = 58 pages) Then there is a lot of one sentence paragraphs with large spaces between, and repetition of earlier text and ideas, so there is not a lot in this book. (about what you would find in a pamphlet) On the plus side, the author's math is very understandable and well explained, better than the text at times.

This book is a "for real" phenomenon...

It's an entertaining read: from his denial of the wave nature of light to his insistence that gravitational waves are "the ether," Walker boldly defies the prevailing theories about space, time and cosmology, re-invents General Relativity to make new and different predictions about the motion of the planets around our Sun, and presents the shocking conclusion that only charged neutrinos can travel at the speed of light.

If you prefer the mainstream approach (I suppose Walker would call it "False Gravity"), read Sean M. Carroll's textbook: Spacetime and Geometry: An Introduction to General Relativity.

About the Author
Angelina Szot is a retired nurse living with her youngest daughter in Hampstead, NH. She had always dreamed of publishing her collection of stories from her time at Danvers State Hospital. She finally made it happen in time for her 78th birthday. Barbara is a Principal Systems Engineer with BAE Systems in Merrimack, NH. She grew up hearing stories about Danvers State Hospital and even spent time at the facility when her parents were working there. She has two children and three step children who all live in the area. The two youngest, Tommy and Angie, love to hear Grandma's stories about working at an asylum. To them, these stories seem like bigger fantasies than anything at the cinema. Barbara believes her time spent at Danvers State Hospital has helped her immensely in her current job. Eileen is a neighbor friend of over ten years who is an educatorin the Haverhill Public Schools in Massachusetts. Barbara's and Eileen's children, Jonathan and Christina, also share a friendship. Of course, thesefriendships grew over the years from shared family events where Barbara's mother, Angelina, was always at the center of Danvers State Hospital storytelling. Neither well written nor informative- Skip It!

Having read as extensively as possible about Danvers State and also having the luxury of hearing first-hand accounts from locals who worked there, I expected an informative book full of interesting tales, accurate descriptions of patients' daily lives, perhaps even photos from Szot's time spent there. This book reads like what it is: some random memories of an aging woman who wants to recount her past. This book is VERY poorly written, mind-numbingly repetitive and contains but a few very short anecdotes of various patient behaviors. Szot describes many of her duties as aide and nurse, (often several times throughout as though the book never met the eyes of another reader let alone an editor before its publication!)but it also annoyingly rambles on about Szot's family life, from her childhood to her pregnancies and beyond. I continuoualy found myself saying, "Get on with it!" or "Yes, you've mentioned that three times already!" From beginning to end I waited and waited to get to the "good part." Sadly, there wasn't one. I truly understand the desire of the elderly to share the stories of their lives, but if you're looking for an interesting recount of the life and times of Danvers State and its patients, look elsewhere!

DISAPPOINTING WASTE OF TIME

To say this book was boring or poorly written would be understatements! The statement on the back of the book promises "an insider's view of what really went on at the state run insane asylum." What you actually get is a rambling and repetitive story of Mrs. Szot's childhood, marriage, family life and problems dealing with her own mother's death. There is very little about the actual "view of what really went on." Mrs. Szot explains that she even took her children to work with her, not a thing one would think to be appropriate if she believed there was "harsh treatment of mental illness" as the cover of the book reported she would "bring to light." A lot of her stories contradict each other, for example she makes a point of repeating early in the book that RNs did not mingle with aides, only to tell the story, more than once, of how when a nurse came in drunk they covered for her. I have been a psychiatric nurse for 17 years and was looking forward to learning more about the history of mental health and treatment of patients, well this was not the place for that. It is a shame no one edited or gave input to these ramblings. Don't waste your money or time.

A short glimpse inside the walls of the "Castle On The Hill"

When it comes to finding any tid-bit of information on Danvers State Hospital, I am willing to read just about anything. I saw Session 9 a couple of years ago and that started my now two year obsession with DSH. Since then I have collected numerous photos, and even travelled out there to see the place for myself.

When I found this book, I didn't know what to expect. The cover was a little misleading. It's dark, foreboding, and hints at dark and strange tales from one of the most famous State Hospitals in the U.S. However, Angelina only hints at a few of her scarier experiences there and spoke a lot of the love and care that went on. She truly did care for her charges and it shows.

I had to use my imagination somewhat to try to figure out what the hospital looked like during her time there. She is no professional author and the use of descriptive terms is not her thing. I don't fault her for that, but maybe the person who helped her write it could have fleshed it out (accurately of course)for those who weren't there.

She also did focus perhaps too much on her family life. It was nice to know a bit about where she comes from but, for my money, I think I learned more than I cared to. I also realize that she didn't tell everything she could have. Im sure that there are A LOT of stories of goings on at DSH that will never leave her (whether for personal or legal reasons).

Overall, it was a good but short read. I read this book in one sitting. Perhaps Mrs. Szot did not write this book to fuel the imagination of the morbid population; maybe she wrote this to bring Danvers State Hospital into a new light...one that shows that although there was a much darker side of the hospital, there WAS caring and hope that also went on there as well.

much hyped little fresh info

I am fascinated by Versailles-I have purchased many books about the palace over the years. I was surprised by the mediocre quality of the photographs in this volume-the camera lens seems fogged. I expected clear sharp in focus photographs-there isnt a single one in the entire volume. The information is rehashed by the author.
Odd that there just isnt very much information about the workings of the palace-there must of been kitchens yet none exist to be seen or even alluded to. There must of been a hierarchy of servants in a palace yet they all seem to have disappeared along with their functions.

I purchased the book mainly because I wanted to see the insides of the palace and how they were decorated. This particular book focused mainly on the art of the palace, inside and out. There were some photos of the Kings and Queens apartments, but that was about it.

A Photo Tour of the Most Splendid Palace

I remember thinking when I visited Versailles years ago that it would be a wonderful place to go running. Oh, I had some other thoughts, about monarchical grandeur and the march of history and so on. But if I lived near the chateau, I would do all my running on its grounds, which are huge, almost two and a half times the size of Central Park in New York. I would run around the fine architecture, and the fountains, and the topiary, and I would never get tired of the environs. I guess this will not happen, but I enjoyed especially the many pages depicting the gardens in _Versailles_ (Abrams) by Valérie Bajou (translation by Antony Shugaar). Bajou is just the one to have compiled this book of photographs; she is a curator at the chateau, and a specialist on French paintings, many of which the chateau contains and many of which are depicted here. The book is not large format; it is a blocky tome of a little more than eight inches square, but with 480 gilt-edged pages and 280 photographs, it weighs in at almost four pounds. I would have been happy with more text and more explanations for each photo, but as a picture book, this will be appreciated as a fine reminder of a previous visit, or an introduction for those who have yet to join the five million people a year who tour Versailles.

In the pocket history of Versailles included here, Bijou reminds us that it was first a hunting ground, a wild place far different from its controlled and classic French garden style (supplemented with English borrowings). It was Louis XIV who in the 1660s started building a palace that would suit him as a show of power and vanity. It is funny to read that the king's bold project did not please everyone. "The Duke of Saint-Simon considered it to be nothing more than a `paper castle.'" He wasn't the only one who thought that the architecture was too traditional and even archaic, a feeling that cannot afflict visitors today. The text here helps place the palace within the centuries it has served as a home, a showplace, a ceremonial court, a museum, and a center for diplomacy. It is fun to read, for instance, about the Queen's Staircase, a gorgeous polychrome marble construction, that it "is the path that the rioters took on October 6, 1789, before breaking into the room of Queen Marie Antoinette." The Historical Galleries include the Hall of Battles, which is even longer than the Hall of Mirrors, and is hung with pictures of French armies victorious. Although in much of the palace, care has been taken to furnish the interior as it would have been during the times of the kings, you could not have a Hall of Battles without many portraits of Napoleon in action. Most of the photos of interiors here have golden baroque richness that any king of the time would have found just the right atmosphere. It is a shock to come to a spread that shows the relatively austere (and relatively is the key word) bathroom of Marie Antoinette, with a black and white marble floor, raised ornamentation on the walls, white (not gilt) over a light lavender, with a simple bed. Another surprise is the only slightly less ornamented room depicted here, a drawing room with a semiofficial-looking desk, and comfortable-looking chairs and a sofa. This is the office that General de Gaulle set up in the northern wing of the Grand Trianon.

Versailles is a monument to absolute kingly power, but modern French governments have continued to support it. Looking at the handsome photographs here, it is easy to see why. Versailles is a vision of a paradise on Earth; the baroque fancies are not what everyone would like as surrounding décor, but they do represent an opulence that is unmatched. This is a lovely book just as befits its subject.
