About the Author
Amy Montgomery is a New Jersey-based freelance writer, who works primarily with corporate clients, and an EMT on her town rescue squad. She has also worked as a radio reporter, press secretary, and adjunct instructor at the University of Michigan. She has a BA from Wesleyan University and an MA from the University of Michigan. She met Scott Remington, the subject of "Just an Accident," while on assignment for the Christopher Reeve Foundation.

Appreciate Every Minute

Amy Montgomery does a great job of capturing the experience of Scott Remington, a logger who suffered a life-changing accident. Close to death, Remington's family and friends immediately form a tight circle of support for him which has only strengthened since the accident. Montgomery provides an intimate look at the physical and emotional challenges faced by Remington and his family.

The writing style is comfortable and enables the reader to quickly identify with all of the people in the book. After a few chapters, the book no longer is about an accident. It is about Remington's character, his capacity to change and his willingness to do so. More importantly, as we see parts of ourselves in the people around him, it is about the ability we all have to become better.

A Great First Book !

Mrs. Montgomery has written an amazing story of survival and courage. With her clear and concise writing style, she has let the strength of the story be her guide - the author tells the story of Scott Remington's horrific accident with a simple clarity that is most impressive - she brings us into the homes of the Remington family and friends and gives us a glimpse of what they all endured after the accident.

Where many authors will throw extraneous adjectives and superlatives at each character or event, Mrs. Montgmery possesses the writing discipline to let Scott Remington's story stand on it's own merits - Well Done !

Great First Book

Amy Montgomery really brings to life both the suffering and humanity of Scott Remington without ever stooping to pity or cliché as is so often found in these books. The "heart" of Scott's parents, children, and friends, as well as the heartbreak and confusion of his wife are brought to life in a clear and precise voice. The graphic description of Scott's medical condition and therapies balanced against the journal entries kept by his parents and friends bring a real humanity to his story.

The author has put forth a great first effort and created a book well worth reading. I am an avid reader of all different genres, but I will keep an eye out for Amy's sophomore effort.

The author, a physicist "who has an interest in medical treatments for mental illness," according to his biography, gives a tutorial on brain chemistry, then lists some psychiatric diagnoses (the various types of depression, psychosis, schizophrenia) and the medications usually prescribed to treat those disorders.

The book has helpful charts and lists that clearly designate drug chemical names, brand names, on- and off-label uses and common side effects. It also includes the pros and cons for each substance, as well as dangerous symptoms and interactions to watch out for. Particularly nice is the directory of websites, both official and quirky, where psychiatric patients and their friends and families can find reliable information and support.

Thompson's candid writing about the most dreaded of side effects, sexual dysfunction, takes this sensitive subject out of the shadows, presenting it as a surmountable challenge.

The author makes a point of stating that he is not a medical doctor, and that MDs are not technically scientists, in the sense that they do little research. While they may be "competent to treat" patients, MDs don't often have what Thompson calls a "deep knowledge of psychotropic medications." If there is a weak point to this book, it is the lack of a nuanced approach to psychotropics and the accompanying therapies that develop from experience, observation and work with real patients--the part of psychiatric treatment that is as much art as it is science. Nothing like it out there...

As a Neuropsychiatrist, I find this book has it all - and in a simple to understand, concise and organized way. Whether you're a consumer looking to learn more about what your physician is prescribing, or a health care provider, this should be a "must have". It puts many of us "professionals" to shame. You can also see my comments in the book - but suffice it to say that if you want to learn more about psychotropic medications, this should be your first stop.

Kevin Thompson wrote Medicines For Mental Health, The Ultimate Guide to Psychiatric Medication because the book needed to be written and read by those of us who are experiencing some form of mental illness. Those of us who experience depression and other forms of mental illness typically go to psychiatrists for help. Psychiatrists prescribe drugs to assist us in living our daily lives. The selection of the appropriate drug with the appropriate dose to fit each individual is as much an art as it is a science. Many times questions remain unanswered.

Drugs used to treat mental illness affect the patient's entire life. First, there are a number of drugs to choose from, each may or may not be effective for a particular individual at a specified dose, and each has potential side effects. Many of the drugs take time to become effective. Second, each patient must become an active participant in their own therapy by observing and reporting their individual response to the drug. Highly intelligent people, typical victims of depression and other forms of mental illnesses, often have creative jobs. Certain medications can destroy an individual's ability to think, perform as a professional, interfere with personal relationship, inhibit a person's sexual performance, or simply make it impossible to stay awake. This book provides information to the patient, and perhaps their loved ones, on how an individual can observe, understand and participate in his own treatment.

The author has organized the information in such a way that a patient can locate a disorder, identified the drugs typically prescribed to treat that disorder, gather information regarding doses and periods of effectiveness, and become aware of the possible side effects. The information in the book is not exhaustive from a medical viewpoint. However, it provides useful information for the patient, information either not discussed or covered too quickly by the psychiatrists.

A Roadmap to the Mental Illness Medical Treatment Process

This is a very useful book for anyone with a family member or close friend being treated for depression, particularly if they went through a couple of different treatment options before finding one that worked - or if they are going through that process right now.

It was enlightening to find out that identical depression symptoms can result from different problems in brain chemistry and that there are different classes of anti-depressants distinguished by how they affect brain chemistry, e.g., Monoamine Oxidase inhibitors versus reuptake inhibitors. Once the right class of anti-depressants is identified for an individual, the next step becomes a search for the medicine with the side effects that the individual tolerates best.

This book provides a roadmap to a treatment process that can otherwise seem bewildering or random. With this book as a reference, it doesn't have to be either. Highly recommended.

love the website - now it's a book!

The author has a way with words about hangovers. In just a few words, he captures a specific set of emotional, physical, and social difficulties in a way that evokes sympathetic pain from anyone who's battled demon rum. The owls serve to illustrate his grasp of the state of being polluted by alcohol in a way that adds joy and wonder. Consistently funny.

Makes my day, every day!

This book is quite hilarious, just as the web site is. My friends and I check it regularly and try to be the first to share the new owls with each other. Anyone who has ever battled a hangover can relate to at least one of these little guys and I can never look at owls the same way now! I still have great reverence for these creatures but this concept takes something many people see one way and puts a new twist on it, and I love that. The book made a great gift for a few of my friends who are really into the site. Thanks for the laughs! :-)

This book is different than most books. The author details the important things about college tennis and progressing as a complete tennis player rather than blab on about things we already know. He brings up very important points that can apply to almost any type of tennis player. The ideas that the author portrays are applicable not only to college tennis but also developing through the professional rankings. The discipline, hard work and concentration regimes that can be acquired from this book, if read seriously, is what every tennis player can use in their game. I am an avid reader of tennis books and this one is right up there with the best.

Great summaries and concise write ups

I didn't buy this to pass any tests. I have been reading David McCullough's book John Adams and watching the DVDs too. And I wanted a way to "move around" within US Revolutionary War history quickly when I had questions about what was happening (or had or was going to happen). So regular history books would be way too detailed. I got what I wanted with this book: Helpful "Timelines" and short essays that cover the main events of each phase and period of the war that can be read quickly and are well-written and hence easy reading too. Also, it's great to have the whole sweep of US history in one book that I can dive into at any point and not only get interested, but invest a little time to get a good understanding of what was happening. So it's useful as a reference book too.

I will make this short and sweet.
I bought both this book as well as the barons sat US history book.
This one dominates in that it makes it 10 times easier to understand. Barron's has a lot of unnecessary info but it is much more thorough in basically all the reading. BUTT it is many times more boring and often very hard to read and understand.
I read this book about 3 times (takes about like 3-4 hours, short read!!), did the tests and skimmed over the barrons and amazingly got a 760!!! it was weird cus on the practice tests in this book, i score no higher than 720. the barrons tests are RIDICULOUSly hard!!!! might be good just for info review. If your like me, where if the reading gets to complex then you tune out, get this one!!! Barrons is unnecessarily cus i did not learn anything from that to be honest..
*make sure you memorize the ammendments,acts,court cases, and important election dates......which leads to (down)

BUY the sparknotes flash cards!! They work pretty. welll i thought soo.

An Amazing Book that Will Gain You 100 Points!!!

I bought this book in May to prepare for the June SAT II in US History and it was amazing!!! Before opening the book, I took a practice test through the OFFICIAL SAT SUBJECT TEST BOOK published by the College Board. I scored a 650 or 660, or something low like that. I was a little agitated because I bought a book for the AP US History Exam and read through that entire tome. Anyway, after recieving the book 2 weeks before the test, I read it cover to cover and took all of the 3 practice tests. Though the highest I recieved on the practice tests was a 690, I somehow pulled a 750 on the real SAT II. This book definately helped a lot and went into great dept on post-WWI. The main reason to purchase this book definately lies in the chapter reviews. They are great and give you the exact knowledge you will need for the test. Also, with review questions at the end of each chapter, the knowledge stays in your head and you retain all of the information. Two of the chapter review questions were word for word on the actual test! I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to recieve a 700+, because with just a small amount of backround knowledge in US History you can learn all that it takes to ace the exam!!! A+, 5 stars, and my highest recommendation!!!

Setting aside the notion of gardens as places of tranquility, this picture book depicts a bustling kitchen garden. Two children help a man with planting, watering, and harvesting vegetables, while a dog, a cat, and a rabbit observe the fun. All around them, snails, caterpillars, birds, bugs, and worms creep, crawl, fly, climb, dig, and generally cavort about this flourishing garden. The ink-and-watercolor illustrations offer plenty of details for children to explore. Cutaway views show small critters nestled in their underground homes between root vegetables. As noted in the title, a repeated theme in the rhymed couplets is the direction plants grow: "Broccoli grows up. / Beets grow down. / Green beans climb / around and around." The short verses create a quick pace and an upbeat tempo throughout. Pair this with Janet Stevens' Tops and Bottoms (1995) for a lively story hour or classroom unit on gardens. Carolyn Phelan

Vegetable awareness, organic gardening, vegetarian fun!

This book is great in so many ways. My 15 mo. old loves it because it has a fun rhythm to it and because he hunts for little things on each page (the kitty, the dog, the butterflies, the vegetables). I like it because it shows kids how plants grow "Corn grows up. Carrots grow down. Cucumbers climb around and around. Peppers grow up. Potatoes grow down. Pumpkins vine around and around...." I also like that the children are gardening with their dad, and that this is (apparently) an organic garden...happy bugs, butterflies, worms, and birds are shown ALL over the plants (in a cute way, and a real way...not a gross way). At the end the family harvests their veggies and creates a veggie stew. Fabulous, positive book...makes natural gardening look fun, and kids learn about plants, too!

Cute rhyming text

I liked this book. The rhyming text is good for my preschoolers and the book is not very long. We read it twice and reached up. bent down and twirled around when the words were mentioned. They enjoyed it very much and could remember which vegetables grew which way.
