About the Author
JOAN and PHIL met in their second year at the University of California and were married in 1944 on the same day Phil graduated from the USNR Midshipman's School, Chicago. Their sons, Tom and John, were born in 1946 and 1949. Following his release from the Navy at the end of World War II, PHIL earned a law degree at Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, practiced law in Oakland, California for seven years, held a couple of minor political jobs, was staff counsel to a trade association and in 1960 joined the law department of Sears, Roebuck and Co. Over the next 26 years he had various responsibilities at Sears including Vice President for Governmental Relations and ultimately, Vice President and Corporate General Counsel. He retired from Sears at the end of 1986, and he and Joan moved to Sacramento, California where he practiced law with Tom, taught at the University of the Pacific's McGeorge School of Law, and volunteered his time in a number of organizations including the Rotary Club of Sacramento where, from 2000 to 2001, he served as President. He died on September 24, 2002. JOAN raised her boys, accommodated to her husband's unstable employment history (which required organizing and managing nineteen moves between 1946 and 1986) and has been a long time service volunteer for the American Red Cross for which she served in a number of chapter and national chairmanships, on the Board of Directors of chapters in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Chicago and Sacramento and as the National Chairman of Volunteers from 1978 until 1982. She has also been active in alumna affairs of her collegiate sorority, Alpha Delta Pi, and its foundation. TOM graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968 and a few months later reported to the Officer Candidate School at the U.S. Marine Corps Base at Quantico, Virginia.
