This is their story of their purpose, their motivation and their challenge to defeat a relentless enemy that had sought a victory by declaring the Vietnamese Revolution in 1968. A story that must be told, one that has been recorded in the authors' book, "The Nature of the Beast". A book that is dedicated to all those who have made that sacrifice to help others to be free.

About the Author
Chuck Ketterman was born in Newark and attended school in Maplewood, New Jersey. Deciding to serve his country after graduating High School in 1964, he joined the Marine Corps and became a squad leader during the Vietnam War. He became a casualty during the Tet Offensive and was awarded the Purple Heart. After graduating from Miami Dade Junior College with an Associates in Arts Degree, he became motivated to record his war memoirs into a book. An ambition had been born and from a collection of letters home and the photographs that he kept through the years, he began to tell his own story.

It can be read by all as a lesson in life dealing with the very mind set of surviving and coping against all odds". Lt. Chuck and I went to school together and upon graduation, we were joined by four other classmates who volunteered to serve in the United States Marine Corps. It was during the 40th High School Reunion that Chuck contacted me and we were able to get back together. After reading Chuck's book twice, I was so proud and impressed that I personally sent copies to many friends that I am closely associated with while serving as a volunnteer and Co-Chairman of a number of U.S. Marine Corps Associations such as The Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation, The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation and the Marine Corps University Foundation. This true, emotional, gut wrenching account of time, place, events, fire-fights, and loss of life got the attention of General James L. Jones (Former Commandant of the Marine Corps and former platoon leader in Chuck's Company), Jack Jacobs and Bob Kerrey (Both Congressional Medal of Honor winners during the Vietnam War, as well as a number of others. I am thanking God for my friends survival after being seriously wounded in the "Bush" and coming home to recount the horrors of the Vietnam War. Welcome home my friend and U.S.M.C. "Buddy". About the Author
Hamid A. Naderi, P.E, C.B.O. is a Principal Staff Engineer with the International Code Council (ICC) where he is responsible for the research and development of technical resources and managing the development of multiple technical projects by expert authors. In addition, Mr. Naderi develops and presents building code, residential code and existing building code technical seminars nationally, and served as the secretariat to ICC¿s drafting committee for the development of the International Existing Building Code (IEBC). Prior to joining the ICC through the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) in 1995, he spent 12 years with the City of Carrollton, Texas serving in various technical and management capacities in plan review and field inspections divisions. He also has a broad range of experience in the areas of geotechnical investigation, construction materials testing and special inspections through his prior employment in the field of geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing. A graduate of the University of Texas in Civil Engineering and a licensed professional engineer, Mr. Naderi obtained his Master of Science Degree with an emphasis in structural engineering and has over 25 years of experience in various areas of building codes administration and training. He is a certified building official and holds three other certifications with the International Code Council in the areas of building inspection, plumbing and plan examination.

Douglas W. Thornburg, AIA, CBO, is the Director of Product Development for the International Code Council (ICC) where he provides leadership in technical development and positioning of support products for ICC. In addition, Mr. Thornburg develops and reviews technical products, reference books and resource materials relating to the International Codes and their supporting documents. Prior to employment with ICC in 2004, he spent nine years as a code consultant and educator on building codes. Formerly Vice-President/Education for the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO), Mr. Thornburg continues to present building code seminars nationally and has developed numerous educational texts and resource materials. He was presented with ICBO¿s prestigious A.J. (Jack) Lund Award in 1996, recognizing his outstanding contributions in education and training. A graduate of Kansas State University and a registered architect, Mr. Thornburg has over 25 years of experience in building code training and administration, including ten years with ICBO, and five years with the City of Wichita, Kansas. He is certified as a building official, building inspector and plans examiner, as well as in seven other code enforcement categories.

Almost useless book

This is a book filled with scripts. Over a 100 of them. The pages look like they came out of a cheap printer. That's not a problem. The problem is, that there's no CD included with the book, and there's no website to download the scripts.

The scripts are supposed to be useful at work, for instance when your boss demands from you that you solve a certain problem. Granted, this book contains a lot of scripts than can be used in different situations. But you have to type them in yourself. And that costs time. You will make errors. You have to hunt those errors down. That will cost time.

The author does not have a support website and neither does the publisher.

The book does not contain an index to enable you to look up keywords. There's an index in the beginning of the book with the names of the scripts and a one-line description of each script. At first, this seems to be convenient, but the second day you want to use this book, the absence of an index, combined with having to do a lot (!) of typing yourself, combined with the certainty of making typos while typing, makes this book almost useless. It is annoying.

When I wrote an email to the author about this, his answer was useless. On top of that, he wrote another email, warning me not to post any of the scripts on my website. I have never received such an email from the many other authors or publishers from whom I have bought books.

My advise: don't buy this book.

I found that studying this book was a great way to learn PERL - actually, it has fantastic examples that let the reader understand the process of writing solid code in any language.

This is, hands down, one of the best "how-to" books on PERL programming that is available.

Powerful and Inspiring

What a powerful story! It's amazing to see how this family's faith in God, their strong wills, and their determination had a life-changing impact. They overcame unbelievable obstacles. Jeff's recounting of the events was very engaging; I didn't want to put the book down. Reading the book was a very emotional and inspiring ride. I highly recommend this book.

Local Author Turns Book into Movie

I bought this book based on information about "Hoovey" the movie being made about it. It is funny how things happen in your own backyard and sometimes you are unaware. It was interesting to read as we knew many of the characters. I am so glad it had a positive message and great outcome. I can't wait for the movie!
