What makes this review book particularly effective is the amount of practice material it has. From my experience, review is important, but it is the practice that really improves test scores. The Kaplan Book book has both. The first 25 pages or so deal with the test basics - explaining the format of the SAT Subject test and general test-taking strategies (eat a healthy breakfast, get enough sleep, don't cram, skip over questions you don't know, etc.) Then comes a diagnostic test, followed by the answers and explanations for each question.

Next comes the Literature Review part (about 60 pages) - detailing the terms one needs to know and various strategies to use while working with poetry, non-fiction, fiction, and play excerpts.

The final part consists of 8 full-length practice exams. Each exam is followed by answers to and explanations for each question. This is what I found to be most helpful in this book. Especially if you have a good amount of time before your exam, it's a good idea to take all eight exams (plus the Diagnostic) and thoroughly go over the answers. The Kaplan Book really helped me; I got a 790 on the test.

I am unsure why I went with Kaplan, but like all other Kaplan standardized test review books, this one was lacking in actually useful content.

Better than the Official SAT Guide

Firstly, I am a college student, who has (clearly) already taken the SAT. However, I ordered this preparation book as part of the Amazon.com Vine Program. As an aspiring English teacher, I found the Kaplan SAT Strategies, Practice, and Review to be far more helpful than the Official SAT study guide, particularly because this 2011 edition of Kaplan's SAT Strategies, Practice, and Review presents many of the little tricks I learned on my own to score 800 on the writing section of the SAT.

Writing Section:

Kaplan 2011 presents a large number of sample essays. Kaplan really focuses upon the 4 P strategy of "Prompt (read and understand it), Plan (collect and organize your ideas and examples), Produce (write your essay), Proofread (check for consistency and errors)." Kaplan 2010 also demonstrates/explores certain characteristics of what makes an excellent 6 essay, including underscoring that essays of 300 to 400 words that are written legible, with often a few corrected mistakes, during a proofread, are far more likely than essays that are less than 300 words, appear hurriedly written, and contain to corrected mistakes. The College Board's Official SAT study, at least the edition I own, does not explore these issues.

As for the multiple choice questions (ex: improving sentence questions), Kaplan 2011 is slightly less thorough than I would have ideally liked. Also, I feel that occasionally some of the sentences contained more than one error, which would not have occurred if one had purchased the Official SAT preparation guide. However, I think that two errors in a Kaplan sentence makes one think even harder about what constitutes a grammatically-correct sentence.

Critical Reading Section:

I felt this section was average and not very different from the Official SAT Study Guide. Of courses, strategies were presented for how to take notes while critically reading a passage, but I did not find the strategies to be particularly helpful considering the time limitations.

However, after the 4 practices, at the end of the book, is a Root Word List and a Vocabulary Word List that defines vocabulary words that may appear on the Critical Reading section of the test. This may assist one in improving one's performance on the vocabulary portion of the Critical Reading section.

Math Section:

Kaplan spends a lot of time focusing on math, (i.e. from p. 178 to 287). The math chapters are entitled, "SAT Math Basics and Strategies," "Basic Math Concepts," "Advanced Math Concepts," and "SAT Math Traps." Overall, the math sections appeared quite helpful, since I must admit that math was never my favorite subject in high school.

Finally:

To each of the 4 complete practice tests, Kaplan provides clear explanations for each problem. While this has become the norm for test preparation guides, I think it is helpful to know that Kaplan's explanations to problems were frequently helpful.

OVERALL ASSESSMENT:

I would recommend this test preparation book in place of the Official SAT Study Guide.

Kaplan Convert

I've worked with inner-city kids on SAT prep for a couple years now, so I'm always looking for new resources to help them prepare. While I've used the Kaplan SAT in a Box flashcards, I've been kind of a purest in using the College Board's The Official SAT Study Guide, 2nd edition. But I'm now a convert.

This book is amazingly detailed and includes great tips from professional tutors and past perfect-score students. I love that the concepts are addressed with clear explanations, step-by-step examples and multiple sample questions. It's well organized, and though the thickness of the book makes it look overwhelming, the majority of the content is sample tests. This book is designed to make students feel at ease about the SAT and confident in the concepts they will face. It even takes time to explain to parents how the test has changed since they took it and why their students might feel more pressure than they did twenty years ago.

As for each individual section, the writing section is extraordinarily helpful when used in conjunction with the vocabulary lists in the back of the book. It could have used a lot more practice essays as that is what my students always struggle to understand. The reading section is adequate, but I wish it would have provided a new way of looking at critical reading. Although I do admit I really like their annotated reading passages than encourage students to mark up their tests. The math section is pure gold--there's really not much more I can say about it. It helps build knowledge of common mathematical concepts students will see on the test and offers practical problem-solving advice.

However, I do have a couple of concerns. The first is that the book spends so much time discussing tips and tricks that it looses sight of what the SAT is supposed to be testing. This is not a test you are supposed to BEAT but an indication that you KNOW what you need to succeed on the college level. My second concern is that this isn't produced by the organization that actually writes the SAT. So while the sample tests and preparation material are based on previous tests and information released from College Board, there's no way to know how accurate it all is.

Overall, this is a great guide and far less intimidating than any other I have used. I'll see how well my students receive it and if it helps them in the coming year.

Kaplan is one of the best, but they also pad a lot

This book has 4 practice tests in it. Four. It is 756 pages long (2.5 times the size of your average paperback novel, and the book is 8.5x11 inch size, not novel size), and it has 4 practice tests in it.

Why not more practice tests? Because they are cramming the following stuff into the book as well:
- Tips from Kaplan's SAT expert instructors and tutors
- Advice and strategy callouts[sic] from Kaplan's SAT perfectscorer[sic]
- Helpful parents' guide explaining how they can help their children use the book and prepare for the exam
- Student study group guide

If you have read ANY of these test preparation books before, from any publisher, you and your student already KNOW all of that stuff. Frankly, most students actively studying for the SAT would know that stuff before they ever open the books. I know my girls did.

I have gotten well over 15 of the Kaplan series of PSAT/SAT books for my girls to use to study as they approach their own SAT exams. (I received this one through the Amazon Vine program though) The practice tests themselves are valuable, make no mistake. And my girls are scoring better on the practice tests every semester.

However, only 4 tests for an almost 800 page book I feel is not a good value, or use of space. Putting the tests online is also a move I don't agree with. Why not put that other filler, such as test taking strategies, online, and have the students able to access THAT with a special code in the book, and instead include 10 practice tests per book? I CAN say that they are being honest about the number of tests actually IN the books in their cover claims now -- they didn't used to be up front about that -- and I am happy about that.

My girls seem to prefer the Kaplan books to study from, over McGraw Hill, or other publishers, so I will continue to get them books to study from, I just wish each book offered more in the way of practice tests, and less in the way of filler.

Once again, Woodson (I Hadn't Meant to Tell You This) handles delicate, even explosive subject matter with exceptional clarity, surety and depth. In this contemporary story about an interracial romance, she seems to slip effortlessly into the skins of both her main characters, Ellie, an upper-middle-class white girl who has just transferred to Percy, an elite New York City prep school, and Jeremiah, one of her few African American classmates, whose parents (a movie producer and a famous writer) have just separated. A prologue intimates heartbreak to come; thereafter, sequences alternate between Ellie's first-person narration and a third-person telling that focuses on Jeremiah. Both voices convincingly describe the couple's love-at-first-sight meeting and the gradual building of their trust. The intensity of their emotions will make hearts flutter, then ache as evidence mounts that Ellie's and Jeremiah's "perfect" love exists in a deeply flawed society. Even as Woodson's lyrical prose draws the audience into the tenderness of young love, her perceptive comments about race and racism will strike a chord with black readers and open the eyes of white readers ("Thing about white people," Jeremiah's father tells him, "they know what everybody else is, but they don't know they're white"). Knowing from the beginning that tragedy lies just around the corner doesn't soften the sharp impact of this wrenching book. Ages 10-up.

Grade 7 Up-Two 15 year olds, Jeremiah (Miah) who is black, and Elisha (Ellie) who is white, meet during their first year at an exclusive New York prep school and fall in love. Both teens are also dealing with difficult family situations. Miah's father has left his mother for another woman, and Ellie is trying to fight through her feelings about her mother, who twice abandoned her family for extended periods. The teenagers must also deal with the subtle and not-so-subtle bigotry that they are subject to as a mixed-race couple. Miah and Ellie go about working through their problems, both individually and together, and their relationship continues to blossom, giving readers a shared sense of contentment. Thus, the tragic climax will leave them stunned. Woodson's lyrical narrative tells the story through alternating voices, Ellie's in the first person and Miah's in the third. This fine author once again shows her gift for penning a novel that will ring true with young adults as it makes subtle comments on social situations.

Gr. 7^-10. People stare when teenagers Miah and Ellie touch and hold hands in public. He is black. She is white. In alternating chapters, we learn about how they meet in their private high school and fall in love, and we learn a lot about their families, both of which are far from perfect. As in all her fiction, Woodson confronts prejudice head-on. Miah's family is rich and famous, but when he and Ellie walk in Central Park, two old white women ask her if she is all right. Ellie, whose family is Jewish and secular, comes to realize that she takes her whiteness, her race, for granted in a way that Miah never can. He always knows he is black. The burning of black churches in the South are part of who he is. His mother accepts Ellie; so does his friend whose family is biracial. But Ellie's lesbian older sister asks Ellie to think twice about dating a black guy. What will her parents do? Readers will wish that Woodson had given us that elemental scene when Ellie brings Miah home to dinner. Instead, the sudden violent ending is a devastating shock that seems stuck on, though it does make us go back and reread the story for clues, and they are there. Didn't Know What I was Getting Into

I should have known better...I've been touched by Jaqueline Woodson's writing before.
I picked up If You Come Softly after one of my 6th grade students recommended it to me. I read the first few chapters effortlessly, and when someone asked me what it was about, I simply said, "Not much." You see--it's not an in your face narrative. It's simple and soft, and the alternating perspectives are hardly noticed--all signs of outstanding writing. I was halfway through the book before I realized the gentle power of the story.
Ellie and Miah attend the same school and have similar views of the world, but they are so different that their sudden love for each other seems impossible. Ellie is the white daughter of a distantly married couple; her numerous brothers and sisters are older and have moved throughout the country. Miah is the black son of celebrities who have recently separated. Both teenagers attend the exclusive Percy School, which is where they meet by chance and fall in love. Despite the stares and whispers, they choose to stay together and learn more about each other. Their love is mature and real (and the author spares us from unnecessary sex scenes). We know from page one that tragedy awaits this relationship, but it doesn't damper the unfolding of their relationship and our interest in the potential of their lives. They love each other innocently and completely, and they tip-toe cautiously into the world of each other's families.
Woodson demonstrates a world view through the voices of these two high school characters--they understand more about race relations than most adults do. There are times, however, when their views of races seems too simplistic--perhaps this was intentional, or perhaps this is Woodson's own view. It's too easy to group together all "whites" or all "blacks" and to create stereotypes of old ladies who stare. But the overall message is appreciated.
I can't say enough about the gentle nature of this story. How an author can provoke so much emotion in such a delicately written story is truly amazing. Woodson is a masterful writer, and this story is perfectly told.

Black Boy, White Girl

Jeremiah Roselind is an intelligent black teenage boy who has to attend a fancy prep school. He bumps into Ellie Eisen, a white girl, in the hallway, and they are immediately attracted to one another. Disapproving glances, whispering voices, snide remarks -it isn't the reactions from other people that tear this young couple apart before their relationship has a real chance to grow, but a tragic event.
This is an interesting, well-written story about interracial dating. I was saddened by the ending, but at the same time I can't wait to read the sequel, Behind You.

Tender, touching and full of teen angst

This book is another winner by Jacqueline Woodson, who seems very in-tune with her inner teen. It is especially timely as it covers a wide range of current kinds of teen issues like split families, siblings, class-ism, and inter-racial dating. Covering both the girl's and boy's points-of-view made it especially intriguing to me. I like Woodson's ear for dialogue, as well.

Nice Introduction to Multisim 9

I'm not experienced in using a bread board, so I decided to use a simulator software to get my knowledge solidified before physically experimenting on electrical components and voltage again.

The workbook exercises are all under the influence that you the reader are using Multisim 9; fortunately, Multisim 10 works flawlessly on this workbook. As for obtaining the program, the license is a hefty $500; therefore, you should just download the trial to experiment on for 30 days. You can also expect a thoughtful chapter 1 to inform the reader on how to use Multisim, as in knowing where to click and place your mouse at, for the computer illiterate. So, this workbook is for any beginners and really compliments your knowledge of AC/DC.

In the exercises, virtually all of them are straightforward and not of extreme difficulty. Its usually just you finishing up the pre-made exercises on the included compact disc(mandatory), then logically answering the questions on the workbook as you go. The knowledge of AC/DC is not needed, but can greatly make the exercises much more smoother. There are sometimes typos, but its not that bothersome.

If you want to jump into some digital exercises on connecting wires and components together for whatever reason on Multisim, then get this to help your journey. If you do purchase this book, I'd strongly urge to purchase from second hand re-sellers and not for the MSRP of $108.95. I just can't justify that pricing when the workbook is paperback and is filled with exercises that can only be done digitally.

learning multisim is kind of tedious with all of the capabilities that are involved with the program, but this book puts it in prospective.

Purchased the product to help me with a class I was taking. It came with an interactive CD that had been previously used and it would not let me load the program required to use the book. So basically it is useless.
