About the Author
William Muehl is Senior Producer at Midway's headquarters in Chicago, IL, where he facilitates the development of globally shared technology, art, and design initiatives across six studios and multiple game teams. He was also a Development Director for the central animation, cinema, audio, character, environment, concept, and user interface departments for Midway titles including John Woo Presents: Stranglehold, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon and NBA Ballers. Prior to joining Midway, William was a producer at High Voltage Software and an online analyst at Sony Computer Entertainment America. He has also written and performed voiceover roles for several published titles and volunteers as Business Committee Coordinator for the Game Audio Network Guild to promote excellence in interactive audio. William received a BA in English from the University of Wisconsin.

Jeannie Novak is the lead author and series editor of the widely acclaimed GAME DEVELOPMENT ESSENTIALS series (with over 15 published titles), co-author of PLAY THE GAME: THE PARENT'S GUIDE TO VIDEO GAMES, and co-author of three pioneering books on the interactive entertainment industry--including CREATING INTERNET ENTERTAINMENT. Development Concept yes, Development Process...no.

This book is well written. It is thoughtful. However, after finishing this book, I find the title somewhat misleading. The book focuses far more on the variety of game simulation types and their uses, and coming up with a concept for a game simulation, far more than actually putting the process to work. I would think a title like "Game Simulations and Concept Development" would be a more accurate title. If you think of this book as trying to give its reader a direction on what type of simulation to base their own creation off of, it comes across as a success. The book takes pains to point how during the conception of the simulation, one has to decide whether to make it more like a game or more like a serious simulation, such as for training surgeons.

Overall I found it educational in terms of history and rediscovering the various types of simulations that exist, but I found it too basic for my tastes.

The book starts out with a section on the history of simulations and how they have become more complex with more and more variables, artificial intelligence and the like, then goes on to describe the audience of simulations, or the who would use them and why. The main 70% of the book covers various simulation categories, such as education, business, military, sports, creative arts, and sandbox-style sims. Interspersed amidst the chapters are quotes and viewpoints from industry insiders. This seems to be one of the hallmarks of the Game Development Essential series, and a welcome one. I found these comments to be the primary sources of insight on game development; unfortunately there was not much insight inside the actual text aside from the tidbits about artificial intelligence pathing. The book concludes with some views on where the future of simulations will lead, which I did actually find insightful.

In short, perhaps I am setting the bar too high for what this book was intended to teach. As a basic overview and idea book, Game Simulation Development succeeds pretty well, but if you're looking for coding ideas, development process guides, etc., you might need to find a higher level book.

A great systematic overview

This books' structure does a great job at making you think actively about game and simulation, what makes them tick, which simulation strategies are successful or a turndown and why so, etc. It offers an indepht view of the genre through a thorough classification, experts comments and quotes, tips and useful case studies. Finally, it describes nicely past, present and future trends along with technology bottlenecks.
A must have for training managers and learning system developper...

Development?

This is a poor book. Written to explain someone who has live for years inside a hidden jungle what game simulations ARE. It doesn't address at any moment how you should face development of such kind of titles, it just show you the many types of titles that could match simulation games.

If you expected to learn something from this book, just move on to another one.

This book is a model of social history at its best. An exegesis of Ballard's diary, it recounts the life and times of this obscure Maine housewife and midwife. Using passages from the diary as a starting point for each chapter division, Ulrich, a professor at the University of New Hampshire, demonstrates how the seemingly trivial details of Ballard's daily life reflect and relate to prominent themes in the history of the early republic: the role of women in the economic life of the community, the nature of marriage and sexual relations, the scope of medical knowledge and practice. Speculating on why Ballard kept the diary as well as why her family saved it, Ulrich highlights the document's usefulness for historians.

Formidable Foremom

We've heard stories of how our great-great-great-grandmothers rose before dawn, plowed the lower forty, baked biscuits and then raised a barn, all before noon. A Midwife's Tale seems to confirm this. Laurel Thatcher Ulrich draws upon a remarkable document, the diary of a New England midwife, Martha Ballard of Hallowell, Maine, who recorded the details of her daily life between 1785 to 1812. Ulrich deconstructs Ballard's laconic entries to reveal the complex routine of a woman who kept a household for seven people, ran a cottage textile workshop, and served as midwife at the birth 816 infants during her 27 years of practice. (There were male physicians in the community, but they rarely intervened in this woman-dominated ritual unless there was a breech or still-birth to be dismembered.) Ballard's ministrations, in fact, went far beyond birthing to the practice of general medicine. She could apply poultices, lance abscesses, expel worms, induce vomiting, stop hemorrhages, bring down a fever, and - all else failing -- gently close the eyes of the dead. In this way, writes Ulrich, the midwife "mediated the mysteries of birth, procreation, illness, and death."

With the help of collateral documents, Ulrich fills out Ballard's entries to give a more complete view of society in a milling village of the early 1800's. She also tracks Ballard's personal fortunes from the height of her prestige into eventual decline. The author takes pains to point out how much of this misfortune was inevitable (the elderly of any era are of necessity pushed from the center to the circumference of society) and how much was due to the hand dealt by fate: Martha had her daughters before her sons; the girls married and moved out, leaving their mother the care of three rather loutish males. The episode underscores how necessary a reliable pool of labor was to the running of any rural household; southern families had their slaves; northern families had their daughters. Historian John Lewis Gaddis calls this book "an exercise in historical paleontology [that] succeeds brilliantly." Winner of the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for history.

An engaging memoir about Taiwan during a tumultuous time in

"The view was wondrous. High mountains rose straight up before me, and as I watched, a flock of white birds...winged their way together across the face of the nearest mountain. It was a Chinese painting in motion."

Not everything was idyllic during Pat Linder's years in Taiwan. For this savvy, globe-hopping Admiral's wife, her husband's posting to Taiwan in 1977 proved not to be for the faint of heart. Earthquakes, political upheaval and the language barrier made for a bumpy ride indeed. There are undercurrents of trouble throughout, from the mysterious phone call advising her to unpack before she ever leaves the U.S., to the daunting number of armed guards around their Taiwan residence, to a rare eye disease that increasingly obscures her vision. And she is scathing in her comments about the cruel practice of foot-binding, designed to keep women from running away from their husbands.

Yet the memoir also contains moments of sheer hilarity, as when Pat makes her first attempt at using chopsticks at an official function, or when - desperate to get her air conditioning fixed - Pat speaks into one of the bugged ceiling fans in her home.

Readers will be amazed to learn how, in 1933, the most valuable pieces from a Beijing art museum were packed into crates and then carried on the backs of peasants for 16 years, lest Japanese or Communist Chinese forces find and destroy them.

When the U.S. government breaks off diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1978, Pat's sympathies are obviously with the Taiwanese people, whom she has come to admire and love.

Since the Admiral shared only unclassified information with his wife, readers will get little in-depth discussion of actual political events. But Pat writes with warmth, humor and passion that is quite engaging.

An impressive and historic memoir of a little know piece of history

The first chapter just jumps right into the dangers and emotions that author Patricia Linder found herself in during a little remembered part of our foreign policy. Her experiences living in Taiwan during a time when the United States was pulling its protection and official recognition to build relations with communist China, is one full of emotion. Her first person account of that period of history is very well told in her newest book "The Lady And The Tiger."

Linder does a masterpiece of reporting from her own heart and soul. She sounds like someone who not only was there physically, but was fully aware of all the political and social issues that surrounded what was happening. She has an intelligent grasp of what happened and why. She writes with great passion and skill to weave the facts and emotions together to give the story lots of energy and movement. This book, at times, reads almost like an action novel. You will get hooked from page one and will have a hard time putting down the book.

She faces riots, mobs and angry people all with great courage. She has to deal with tapped phones, and armed guards that she cannot fully trust and even rooms in her own residence that are bugged with listening devices. The events and culture that she found in Taiwan are not what this wife of a Rear Admiral was expecting. This was a tour of duty that was going to really test her soul!

A Fascinating Read

Patricia Linder, the wife of Rear Admiral James Linder, writes about some of her experiences in Taiwan from 1977 to 1979, a turbulent period in Taiwan-U.S. relations. RADM Linder was the last Commander of the U.S. Taiwan Defense Command during that time, including the day that President Carter announced that the United States was severing diplomatic relations with the Taiwan government.

This book was clearly not intended to be a study of the history of Taiwan, its people or its geopolitical situation. It is simply a first-hand account of the times as she lived them. Those of us who were in the U.S. military serving in Taiwan will recognize many of her descriptions and anecdotes. I found myself smiling often as I read it.

Great professional introduction for college students

Frick's Managing Interactive Media Projects is an ideal textbook for college media professors who want to introduce their students to the world of professional media development. Founder of the Chicago media design firm Mightybytes, Frick takes students from conceptualization and early planning all the way to launch, promotion and management. He does what many multimedia textbooks fail to do, which is to accurately and effectively represent the entire process, not just the content creation and software use in the middle.

For Frick, creative design happens through effective project management. Frick provides his readers with tools for creativity at the points where they will function most productively for the designer and the client. One of the things that I especially like about Frick's approach is the care he has taken to make the book feel like it is engaged with the ideas and activities under consideration. Its design concept replicates the busy work environment of a professional media developer, right down to the coffee cup stains. All the way through Frick includes photos of people engaging in the process he depicts. Whereas often in textbooks, these kinds of photos look staged and artificial, the people in these photos help create the feel of a design studio and reinforce Frick's message that it's interaction between people, first and foremost, that makes for good interactive media design and project management.

Great Overview Especially for College-wide Audience

Even if you are not a web designer or interactive media creator, the book "Managing Interactive Media Projects " by Tim Frick, is a great resource. I use this book in my college-level web design introductory class and it is a God-send. This book breaks down the complete creative process for you and is replete with comprehensive and practical advice -- as well as great case studies that illustrate what can go right or wrong.

Reading this book will help you to understand many phases of the project management process, such as:

* Managing projects
* Conceptualizing an idea and initial planning
* Proposal writing
* Defining from your project specification
* Understanding different design processes that are effected by content
* Presenting your ideas to the client
* Flowcharting your idea
* Creating scripts and asset lists
* Art direction
* The revision process, approvals, scope and feature creep
* Design production
* Production and programming
* Testing, revision tracking and quality assurance

I highly recommend Tim's book to anyone working in interactive media. It's one of those books that you'll keep close by in order to easily grab it for reference. Tim breaks down all the essential steps and provides relevant case studies. He's very engaging and you can tell that he really knows his stuff and is passionate about his craft. This book will help me in my role as an Account Manager as it really touches on the people aspect of interactive media creation. I will make sure to accidentally leave it around the office for others to also learn from it.

About the Author
Bill Welch learned to sail with wooden spars and cotton sails on the Town Cove in Orleans, Massachusetts, in the late 1950’s. His passion for sailing quickly evolved to the discipline of racing. He began racing in Turnabouts and Sprites, and was introduced to catboats by skippering a Beetle Cat for one of the local juniors. Lazy Cape Cod summers were soon replaced with college and eventually medical school. New sailing adventures included cruising in the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands, with his wife, Sherry. He returned to racing during his surgery residency in Coconut Grove, Florida, where they raced a Creekmore 23 together. After residency, Bill and Sherry began a private practice in general and vascular surgery in St Petersburg, Florida, where they successfully campaigned a J-27, as well as starting and co-captaining a very active Snipe fleet. They have raced in events all over the world as competitors in the Snipe Class. Along the way Bill was a commodore of the St Petersburg Yacht Club, and US Snipe Class National Secretary. Currently they sail a Marshall 15 on Useppa Island, Florida in the winters, and on Pleasant Bay, Cape Cod in the summers.

Filled with information about catboats

I bought a used Compass Classic 14' catboat and wanted to know whatever I could about this class of sailboat so I ended up with five books - some given and some bought. This book is by far the best. It is filled with details about every aspect on catboats - it is not only about competition and racing. Whenever I heard a term I didnt understand i would find it explained in this book. Every time I pick it up I learn something that I didnt know.

Great advice!

I race 9' Nutshell prams with a bunch of older guys on Friday afternoons. I was tired of getting my butt beat week after week and couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. I've been sailing, but not racing, since I was a kid. This book has had a major impact on my tactics and strategy. I am now competitive and am pretty consistently among the first to finish!

Great book for racing as well as cruising

The book is highly instructive for a catboat sailor of any level. Even if you are not into racing, the author provides many great suggestions and advice that apply to improving your cruising experience. The illustrations and pictures are very helpful.
