A fun read with a hell of an ending.

The is an exciting book with many unexpected turns and San ending which is a complete surprise. It is an in depth view of the stock market and an intriguing look into the stock market. It is a thriller that develops an interesting search for the connection between a mysterious trader and the woman he loves . A murder complicates the relationship.
The assistant to the am idiots stock broker is the sex interest of two, then three of the characters. She has an affair for the sake of information Andy controls the events up to the surprise ending. I give this book four stars. I would think it would make a great movie. D. George

Grade 8 Up-A historical novel set during the Middle Ages. Marnie, 16, is forced to marry an older man due to a series of family misfortunes. After just two days with her drunken husband, she prays that something will happen so that he will no longer desire her. That very day he falls from a ladder to his death. In terror, she goes to the village priest, crying out that she is at fault for Isake's demise. Three old women overhear her and set the gossip mill in motion. As these tragic events swirl around her, Marnie gets to know Raver, a young man viewed as an idiot by the villagers, who beat him mercilessly to "whip his devils out." Marnie pities him at first, and fears him a little, until she deduces that he is deaf. She renames him Raven and invents "hand words" that become their own private language. Their relationship, plus the strange signs they constantly make, convince the villagers that Marnie is a witch who must be destroyed. This highly absorbing story has well-realized characters that come fully alive. Marnie is smart, independent, and strong willed. Raven is quick and intelligent, but naive. As their friendship deepens into love, an innocent but very real sensuality surfaces. There are rich details here about living conditions in the Middle Ages. The powerlessness of the peasants and the superstitions fostered by the Church, including a trial for witchcraft, are vividly portrayed. This is an ageless story about the power of love that should leave a satisfying and lasting impression on its readers.

My all time favourite book!

This definatly the most brilliant book I've ever read. To sum it up, it's about a lovely, kind, sixteen-year-old girl named Marnie who comes to a tiny seaside town called Torcurra with her (considerably older) new husband. As they arrive, they witness the beating of a mad boy. Marnie gives him some food while her husband is in the Alehouse. That night, her husband, drunk and with a "thirst for lust" rapes Marnie. Two days later, he falls from a ladder, and dies. She has befriended the priest, who is the only one who believes that Marnie didn't put a curse on her husband. She has also befriended Raver, the very same village madboy whom the villagers were beating when she came. She renames him Raven of the fields, and, after spending more and more time with him, discovers Raven is not crazy, or mad, he is deaf. Over time, they invent a sign-language of sorts. The villagers notice a change in Raven, who has become civil and no longer has noticable "fits of madness." Well, one thing leads to another, and the villagers get a notion that Marnie murdered her husband, and bewitched Raven and Father Brannan (the priest). She is tried for witchcraft... and you'll have to read the book to find out.
I won't go saying that Marnie, doesn't have her flaws, because she does. But what do you want, a perfect main charachter?? I've read books that have the same perfect, unflawed main character, and you know what it is?? BORING! No one is perfect (although we hate to admit it), and we all have charachter flaws that get us into trouble...Marnie is very outspoken for a woman of her time, but whose wrong, here. The townspeople and Marnie's family who are unwilling to accept Raven? (and everyone else who is different)Or a young woman who is willing to give everyone a chance, even if they "aren't normal." Early in the book, in answer to Isake's remark about the townspeope beating Raven which was something like "oh, look, a group of sages beating the devils out of a fool," Marnie says "or maybe its a group of fools trying to beat the devils out of a sage." That is one of the best things I've ever heard, thats all I want to say.
I just read a review that said that there was too much sexual content for the age group. First of all, what age group would that be? Sure, a bit advanced for a ten-year-old, maybe, but it says on the back of the book ages 12 and up. Second of all, WHAT SEXUAL CONTENT?? If one beautifully written (pretty tame) love scene between two exuisite characters is that bad...Well this is neither the time or the place.
As an aspiring writer, I was entranced by the beautiful imagery, and amazing character development. You hate the evil charachters, and you love the nice ones. Just the right amout of romance (I have to say that I am one giant hopeless romantic) the right amount of exitetment and agitation, and fantasy. A picture perfect read!

A story that is UNFORGETTABLE

I have read and reread this book and will most likely read it again. It is sad at some points but the story is amazing and there are many happy parts too. The characters are very well developed and you will laugh and cry right with them. You fall right in the story of this girl who has to try to be accepted by people far away from home and helps another be understood. You must read this book.

A book that stradels the line between young adult and adult, pleasing both sides

I have never really understood what separates a young adult book from a plain old adult book. Oh I know there's a certain difference in style of writing, words chosen based on the expected vocabulary of the target audience, but beyond that it's just plots. And who can guess what plot will appeal to who? Some of the books I treasured as a young adult remain favorites today because they're simply good books. But this novel, though marketed and sold for young adults, perhaps even written for them, is one I think can safely be said to appeal to older readers as well.

"The Raging Quiet" is a novel about outsiders. Marnie is a newlywed when her much older husband dies, leaving her alone and without resources in a hostile and enclosed village. The friends she manages to make are the local priest and the village madman-who Marnie discovers quickly, is not mad at all-only deaf and re-names Raven. But soon her "magical" abilities to communicate with Raven make the locals suspense, and have Marnie on trial for her life.

I must say that when I first read this book when I was eleven, I was disturbed by some of the content. So the official warning to parents: this book includes not descriptions of but illusions to rape, sex and a rather descriptive scene of what would now be construed as torture. It's probably not fit for every kid to read. Another reason why I see it as a line crosser.

I enjoyed this the first time I read it but liked it even better the second time. Adult or child this is a good book that's well written.

Four stars.

This is the best SAT-prep book. I use it when I tutor my students.

This is the book I use with all my PSAT and SAT students. It provides a great overview of the test, teaches the Kaplan test-taking strategies, and supplies the student with several full-length tests so he/she can practice his/her new skills. There are generally very few changes from one year to the next, but I like the 2009 book because there's a new introductory section AND fun exercises to do as "study breaks" at the end of each section. While the content is pretty much the same as the 2008 version, it seems they left out a few of the pages of instructional material that I found very instructional in last years' edition.

Better than expected

I purchased this book for my son who is a sophomore in HS. Unfortunately, I've spent more time with it that he has! It is very compreshensive and provides a good number of tips for both how to prepare for the test and how to tackle specific questions. There are a lot of practice questions and full-lentgh practice tests.

There is an online component that I thought would be more useful, but it seemed more to be a way to try to get you to enroll in Kaplan's VERY expensive test prep courses. We have not explored the online content in much detail.

Overall I think it was a good value.

An SAT Must Have!

As an SAT Tutor, I have found this book most helpful to use with my students. From math strategies to grammar traps, this book covers it all. I have found the "Math Traps" and "Common Mistakes" to be the most useful parts. The four practice tests provided in the book are of moderate difficulty. Test one and four seem to be the most difficult, and test three seems to be the easiest. I recommend this resource to any student who wants to learn how to understand "SAT lingo" and get inside the heads, per say, of the test writers. I also recommend this resource to any tutor or parent that is looking to help a student prep for the SAT exam. SAT prep can be rather arduous, but is always rewarding--good luck!

Cool little children's book honoring Obama and America

Kadir Nelson is an accomplished artist with an impressive body of work on display. President Barack Obama is a gifted orator who inspires. The combination of Obama's words and Nelson's spirit-of-the-moment charcoals make for a tidy little package celebrating Obama's election as the nation's 44th President.

This slender volume is just about perfect for it's target audience, the 4 to 8 year old set. It's very obviously a children's book in tone and execution, the illustrations giving life to words gleaned from several of Obama's more famous speeches.

This book retails on Amazon for just over a 10-spot, and considering the price of some of the other hardcover books targeted at the same audience, that's probably not a bad deal, especially if you'd like something to share with your child that celebrates and commemorates Obama's election.

Smaller than a Breadbox

This book was a bit of a surprise. For one thing, it's small. Like smaller than a breadbox. (Does anyone use an actual breadbox or do we just use the expression?) I was expecting a regular picture book and instead it's the size of a half-sheet of paper. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I thought you should know.

The second thing shouldn't have surprised me at all since I'd seen the cover of the book, but it threw me anyway. This isn't "We Are the Ship" Kadir Nelson or even "Please, Puppy, Please" Kadir Nelson. You won't find his intensely real and lush painting here. Again, not that there's anything wrong with that, but I thought you should know.

What you will find are significant phrases from Obama's speeches paired with sketches inspired by those words. Some of the sketches are very loosely rendered, like one featuring the backs of several people at voting booths. There are scenes from the rallies that are simply sketched, yet capture the feeling of the crowd and the energy. The illustrations of Obama are the most meticulously drawn, with an accurate and vibrant representation of the man.

This book offers a quiet, short space for reflection on this amazing election. I kept returning to one picture of a serious, resolute Obama that was accompanied by this phrase: "The audacity to hope for what we can and must achieve tomorrow." Because it is tomorrow.

Pictorially Accurate.

I attendend President Obama's 2009 inauguration as an amateur photographer. Kadir Nelson's loose black and white sketches/drawings of this historical movement are an accurate representation of what I experienced. His rendering(s) of the American flag, the people holding signs, the different ethnicities within the massive crowds, and the overall joyous feel of this keepsake book are a wonderful depiction of this great American achievement.

While vigorously turning the pages to study the books art work, I found myself unconsciously reliving the moment as a result of Kadir's accurate representation. A moment of deja vu that pleasantly caught me by surprise and tranported me back to this time of historical significance that many believed would never come to fruition.

If you are a lover of history, someone who did not attend the inauguration, or someone who did attend as in my case, I with no reservations recommend you purchase "Change Has Come" by Kadir Nelson as a means of second handedly experiencing this most celebratory moment.

Lee Brainerd has been a teacher, editor, and textbook writer for over 34 years. Brainerd has taught English as a Foreign Language to K-12 in Senegal, West Africa, Boston, and New York, and to amnesty seekers in Los Angeles. She was an adult educator with National Education Center for 10 years, where she taught adults who were training for civil service, management and secretarial careers. She has written or contributed to over 40 textbooks and test-prep books. Brainerd and her writer-husband live in Altadena, California.

C Roebuck Reed is a multi-tasking writer, test prep instructor, and documentary filmmaker. She lives in Southern California.

i passed so this book did something right

i bought this kaplan book and i borrowed barrons from a friend. i don't think i would've made it with the barrons book alone. mostly studied off of kaplan. kaplan definitely had more review material and explains it all to you the way you need to know it for the test. plus it has great study tips and excellent review questions. i have to warn you tho, when i took the actual test i didn't totally feel confident in my answers and with some questions even clueless. i mostly made educated guesses based on what i had studied in the book. well, even tho i wasn't 100% sure about most, i have to say that kaplan must've done something right cuz i passed all three sections my first and only time. it lived up to it's advertisement of "passing score guaranteed".

Pretty Good Study Guide

With a "passing score guaranteed," and good reviews on Amazon, I figured I had nothing to lose by getting the Kaplan CSET, 2nd Edition study guide. The Kaplan CSET study guide has some good test-taking strategies and information that I found helpful for Subtest One, which I took on Jan. 12, 2008. However, Kaplan CSET doesn't cover everything that could possibly be on the test, and there were some questions on the test that were not covered in the book. Fortunately I used other resources as well, so I wasn't totally in the dark. So while I recommend Kaplan CSET and think it's a good study guide, I also recommend supplementing it with other study guides, textbooks, online research and other study tools.

Outsmarting the Test Prep Book? REALLY??!!

While the Kaplan CSET prep book includes a lot of great information in a nicely summarized fashion, it feels incredibly haphazardly thrown together -- there are TYPOS EVERYWHERE. I couldn't go a few pages without finding a new typo. It upset me so much (not only annoying and careless, but it often caused me to have to reread passages because the typo misrepresented the information) so I wrote Kaplan a complaint (by the way, this was only halfway through the prep book). But I have also now noticed multiple errors in the practice test at the end of sections where they said one answer was correct (let's say "D" for example) but then in the answer explanation the claimed that a different answer was actually correct, completely contradicting themselves.

If my test prep book can't even put in enough effort and care to avoid typos (something that I, as a writer, know is KEY to professionalism) then how am I to trust that the information they're giving me is accurate?

It surely can't be difficult to look out for these things prior to publication. I was extremely pleased with the CBEST test prep book I purchased from PRINCETON REVIEW -- so I will definitely be using them the future.

Helpful, but Frustrated Within 5 Minutes

Admittedly, I am yet to check every sermon, but I have become frustrated with this book already. I own the 2005 guide as well, and it helped me greatly earlier in my ministry. As my role has continued to change in the years, I purchased the 2010 guide as a "Backup" for weeks that are especially demanding on my time, and I have to "fill in" with something I haven't written myself.

However, the first two sermons I found interesting immediately disappointed me. The first sermon had a very personal story as the main illustration. In my experience the most difficult part of preaching is often life application, which is where the illustrations come in. However, this was simply so personal that it couldn't be adapted for anyone other than the author without lying and claiming the story as your own. If you purchased the book to do long term planning (which I think is a bit lazy in the first place) then you can work around it, but crafting the right illustration is difficult, and this entry was completely useless.

While I was disappointed with the first example, I was angry with the second sermon that caught my interest. It seemed like a perfect sermon for my church! But as I looked through the points it seemed very familiar. I didn't remember writing a sermon from the Scripture recently, but I just couldn't get over how familiar this sermon was to me. Until I opened my 2005 version. It was the exact same sermon. Not just the same Scripture, the exact same sermon. Same author, same points, same illustrations... a word for word duplicate.

To be completely honest, even if every other sermon was extraordinarily useful, helpful, and applicable (which I'll be fortunate if 25% are) these two sermons are enough to frustrate me. Simply put, this is very poor editing. Dr. Wheeler has a legitimate excuse - he doesn't appear to be in preaching ministry. Perhaps over-personal illustrations and repeats aren't as damaging in academia or when on speaking tours, but it makes these exerts useless to the average pastor. Dr. Spann is, however, in preaching ministry and could easily ask himself if he could get away preaching each of these sermons in his own context, to which he'd have to answer, "No."

Disappointed with the new cd format.

In the past, the included CD allowed you to cut and past, this year it is in a read-only PDF format. The cut and paste was a very helpful for pulling stories and info for the bulletins and customizing outlines as well as being able to print out the various registries. Without this, the book is average at best. The CD is what set this book apart from so many similar books available.

This is a compilation of new and classic sermons and outlines, with worship aids for full services, for 52 weeks. There are music suggestions made up of contemporary music and hymns. Each week includes ideas for two alternate sermons with lesson ideas for extra services or Bible teaching opportunities.

Material has been gleaned from the works of 52 well known evangelical pastors and teachers, contemporary and classic. The material is cross referenced by topic and scripture. The valuable stories, illustrations, and references to "This Day in History," all add to the value of this notable resource. A software package accompanies the book.

The event specific sermons and related resources for occasions such as: Funerals, Candlelight Services, Child Dedication, Patriotic Services, The Lord's Supper, Baptism, Sanctity of Life, and Holiday messages provide new material and will be especially helpful in providing freshness to your services throughout the new church year.

The material does not follow a common lectionary calendar but is a collection of independent topical sermons and resources which can be followed as dated or rearranged to follow a topical series.
