A great book for anyone who needs to create a certification program

When I came up with the idea to create a certification program and proposed it to my Company, it excited pretty much everyone. The challenge was of course to come up with a Business Plan to create it and convince the Senior Management about its benefits.
I started researching on this topic and the only useful resources I managed to find on internet were written by Tracey. That's when I decided to get this book and take a deeper dive in this subject.
This book has been immensely helpful to me. Its also probably the only on on this topic. Getting down to creating certifications is quite a challenge you need a mentor to guide you on the right path. And this book does exactly the same. You get to know so much about this subject, especially those areas which might go unnoticed during initial evaluation and planning.
I will recommend this to anyone who has been assigned this job of creating a certification program or who wants to understand this topic better.

Why reinvent the wheel?

I work on the Education team of a nonprofit dedicated to providing standards for use by publicly-listed corporations in the U.S. in disclosing material sustainability issues.We ordered this book after deciding to launch a professional certification program and coming across several of Tracey's blog posts.

It's been a marvelous resource for us. The chapters are well-organized and the lists and templates are concise yet comprehensive. I would highly recommend this book to anyone tasked with developing a certification program. Tracey's authority on the subject is obvious and leveraging her expertise on the matter provides a useful launching point for any organization looking to design such a program.

I have been asked to build out a certification program at my company, and with no previous experience on this type of project, this book is very helpful. It really takes you through the whole process in a clear and thorough way. I would appreciate more references to programs for customers and partners, as my program is for external facing audiences.

Best Book for InDesign Beginner!

I've been determined to learn InDesign for the longest time. I've came across books after books but just thought they were too confusing. I was finally introduced to this one by my professor. This one is so easy to read. The chapters are well put together in a nice appropriate order. I cant see how someone doesnt learn InDesign through this book! The author even manage to teaches typography! (which will explain why you even need to know about kerning and tracking, etc. option on top) They're are projects and test at the end of the chapters that ensure that you will learn. They're are these "try this" examples throughout the books. Basically its very hands-on and that's a good thing. To learn something you literally have to try it right? So if you do everythign like it said I cant see why you wont learn InDesign.

But yeah I've sit in Barnes & Noble reading all the InDesign books they offer and went to libraries checking out different books there too and this is truly the best of them all! I am finally learning InDesign!

I dont normally write a reviews but seriously I've been searching the world for something that would teach me InDesign and now its such a relief.

Not for beginners

I am currently using this book for an online InDesign class I am taking, and I have to say I really do not like it at all. I have no previous knowledge of InDesign and this book has managed to make me dread doing the work. It is very confusing. One example is the book does not explain the measurement system until the middle of chapter 2 and yet, there are several projects in chapter 1 that you need to know how to set a certain size margin. This seemingly simple task turned into an all out panic session--trying to figure out the point and pica systems and convert it to inches with no knowledge of how to go about doing it. In every chapter, I spend more time trying to figure out stuff on my own than I spend applying what I've learned. Another thing, the writer does not spend enough time going back over information already learned. For example, Rydberg stresses the importance of learning shortcuts, yet might only tell you how to do it once. There are step-by-step instructions; however, half of the time he'll only tell you what the outcome should be and will fail to tell you how to go about doing it. It's not like Classroom-in-a-Book where they give you detailed step-by-step instructions every single project you work on. This book is not for people who have little patience, have no knowledge of InDesign, and don't feel like wasting time trying to figure it out.

Wealth of Info!

I agree with the last reviewer...Terry did a wonderful job. I came from practically no page layout background and found this a great place to start. It isn't exhaustive in technical InDesign training, but makes up for that with lots of useful "real world" information that manuals don't cover. I highly recommend it to any beginner. Thanks Terry!

Time for a story my little brother

That Baby Woke Me up AGAIN by Sherry Ellis is the cutest story about a big sister, who wants to know why the baby cries, so you need to get so you can read and especially if you have a daughter, that now has a baby brother or sister that wakes them up with his cries, you won't be sorry it is really a great an even if short its the big sister or even a big brother will enjoy reading to the baby.

Rhyming verse and friendly illustrations tell the story of a young child who cannot sleep because a cranky baby is always crying! Exasperated, the child goes to her parents, who gently explain why babies cry, and why she should have faith that eventually the baby will sleep fast through the night. "For once you were that noisy babe / who kept us up all night; // We counted sheep, / we tried to sleep, / five, six, seven times; // but every time / it was your whine / that woke us up AGAIN!" An excellent read-aloud book especially for sharing for older siblings having trouble getting used to a new baby in the household.

I read this to my 4 year old grand- daughter the third night her baby sister was home and she related to the story very well. She wantedf me to read it every night thereafter.

I have never known a little child that is overjoyed to share the spot light. It is great that books like this tell it like it is and allow a child to react naturally to the joyous event. Someday they will be very happy.

This heartwarming, sweeping tale assures young children that we all have a special place in the world!

The clouds gathered together in the sky to display their strength and unity, but Little Cloud didn't want to join in. She poof! . . . went off by herself, not "wanting to blend into a group and lose her freedom, not wanting to frighten the earth" with peals of thunder and claps of lightning. She drifted over the mountain tops and flitted like the butterfly over the colorful flowers. The landscape was beautiful but she was somehow dissatisfied with her life and began to dream of other things. Little Cloud wanted to touch the earth, to "skip in the snow," dance in the waves and rest her head in the flowers.

When the night fell, she continued to dream until someone gently prodded her awake. Whooosh! Whooosh! Little Cloud was soon looking into the eyes of Lady Wind, who quickly gathered her into her arms and "raced across the sky." They encountered a fierce storm, but she warned Little Cloud not to be afraid. Through the night and in between the storms they "dodged knives of lightning, bumped into mountaintops poking through the dark, jumped over ocean waves reaching up to grab them." Little Cloud, exhausted from fear, finally fell asleep in Lady Wind's arms. Was there a lesson that Lady Wind had to teach her little protégé to show her how she would fit in with the world?

This heartwarming, sweeping tale assures young children that we all have a special place in the world. Inspired by Aesop's fable, "The Bundle of Sticks," this story has a nice, subtle way of telling the young child that he or she is very special even if they don't quit fit in with the rest of the crowd and march to their own drummer. The beautifully rendered illustrations pull the story along very nicely. It somehow had a nice nostalgic feel to it that I felt very drawn to. If you want a touching tale that has a "lesson" to impart for your circle or story time, this would be the perfect choice!

The deeply-imagined illustrations of Sean Qualls are what make this book fantastic and magical. With great visual subtlety and grace the images enhance Toni Morrison's fable inspired by Aesop. Qualls has the gift for seeing how to give shape and volume to invisible elements--and he stirs a place of beauty in the imagination of readers lucky enough to spend time with these images. I keep the book on my coffee table; its sumptuous art amazes guests--who linger to study its many layered technique and rich monochromatic color.

Little Cloud and Lady Wind is a lovely, lovely book. The writing is simple and poetic. The illustrations are clear and gorgeous. I witnessed the book being read to a group of small children. They were riveted by the text. When the reader showed them the pictures, the children responded with oohs and ahs. I highly recommend Little Cloud and Lady Wind!

Whitman Massacre

My granddaughter came to visit so she could tour the Whitman Mission. As part of the "total experience" our family watched 7 Alone, the "story" of the Sager's emigration to Oregon in the 1840's.
Seven Alone didn't include the Whitman Massacre which occurred in the fall of 1847. When we covered Oregon history in grade school the massacre was mentioned, but not really the reasons behind the attack. The Mission tour covers the issues of disease brought west to inhabitants without immunity, the concerns over the number of emigrants settling on tribal lands, and the traditional liability of tribal healers for treatments that do not prevent death. This book also covers those issues but provides the insight of someone who was there and experienced the events leading up to and during the massacre. The two Sager boys died during the massacre, the author is one of the Sager girls who survived the massacre.
I really appreciated the book for three reasons:
1) It provides a first person account of the Sager children's emigration which portrays the other members of the wagon train in a much better light than the Seven Alone movie. The movie portrays the children as abandoned by the other emigrants and traveling several hundred miles on their own prior to arrival at the Whitman Mission. The book points out that the children were assisted the by the other members of the wagon train from when they lost their surviving parent until they were placed in the care of Narcissa Whitman.
2) It describes mission life and how the Sager children were incorporated into the Whitman family for the years between their arrival at the Mission and the time of the massacre.
3) It provides a first person account of the events leading up to the massacre and the events of the nearly month long ordeal that was the massacre. In addition to the disease, alarm at the number of emigrants settling tribal lands and the failure of Marcus Whitman's medical treatment to prevent ill Cayuse from dying, the author identifies an outsider who arrived at the mission who incited trouble hoping to obtain wealth by eliminating the Whitman's. This individual convinced a good number of the Cayuse that Whitman's medicine was actually poison and that Whitman was administering it to eliminate the Cayuse and make room for additional emigrants to settle.
What an ordeal these girls and women survived during and after the slaughter of all the men during the massacre. Makes me wonder why this account by one of the Sagers was not featured more prominently during Oregon history lessons.

not worth it!

While it is fortunate that this rare book has been made available to the public, it is with great displeasure that I have received it today. The way this diary is published is really a shame, it is more like a pamphlet than an actual book. An acceptable price for a pamphlet such as this would be about $3.00 rather than the $12.00 that I paid for it. The unsightly yellow illustration on the item description is actually the cover of the book, not a generic stock image as I assumed it was. This flimsy, poorly printed pamphlet is not worth the price and it fails to do justice to the author's text.

Westward, HO!

In 1975 I saw a film titled "Seven Alone," a cheaply made motion picture depicting a Missouri family's trek westward in the Oregon Rush of the 1840s. It was the story of the Sager children, seven young kids orphaned along the Oregon Trail, and it was inspired by a true story. "Across the Plains in 1844" was a manuscript written by Catherine Sager, one of those kids, who as an adult, wrote this small account of her childhood journey. Author Honore' Morrow would later write "On to Oregon," a fuller account of the same story. But, here is the original.
Anyone interested in the American westward movement in the mid 19th century should have this work, or Morrow's book, a fascinating glimpse into hitorical Americana.
