About the Author
J. Manuel Espinosa studied folklore at Stanford University under his father, and received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1934, where he studies southwestern history under Herbert E. Bolton. He is the editor of The Pueblo Indian Revolt of 1696 and the Franciscan Missions in New Mexico: Letters of the Missionaries and Related Documents, also published by the University of Oklahoma Press.

A historical book, the counterpart of leftist views on 1936's Spain

This book in by no means what some propaganda tactics explain at all. Spain was in a very disastrous predicament in 1936. The Republic was not a democracy anymore. The left was very radicalized. There was very little room for other views and frustration, shortages of foods, shortages of opportunities, along with jailed opponents of the leftist government and the assassination of one of the main oppossition leaders, Calvo Sotelo led to the rebellion that followed.
The individual life of anybody who had different opinions to the 5 year old Second Spanish Republic was worth very little.
Anarchists, Socialist, Communists and lef wingers of undetermined origin all supported the State in disarray. The so called "Popular Front" was inducing more animosity than unity and it caused the still young Republic to be an unwelcomed system for most Spaniards.
Franco was, for the most part a loyal General to the 2nd Spanish Republic. But discontent was growing since the end of 1935 and even more so in January of 1936, when the Popular Front took power.
Franco and a great many other military officers had enough of the caos derived from the extreme left-winged government. Reality became that something had to be done to re-establish political order and get the economy back in order as well.
It is true that a great number of the military rebels were pro-Monarchy. And Franco knew about it. Not many were very keen to follow Republican directives.
But it was the animosity of the times that brought this conflict into becoming the most bloody blood bath in Spanish history.
Franco may have been a dictator, but he saved Spain fron the claws of Stalin and his 2nd Communist International offensive.
By Franco taking command in Spain, the country was spared from being invaded by Nazi Germany later on, and the British were able to still keep Gibraltar from Nazi hands.
USA was very pro-Republic, and the Lincoln Brigade defended the 2nd Spanish Republic; something that is to be respected, but to the Spaniard, there was more at stake than having to keep a coalition in power that ultimately wanted to surrender Spain to Soviet domination.
