From the Author
Like many veterans of the Vietnam war, I came home to a different world than the one I'd left a year before.  My family, my fiancee and I expected my return to a "normal" life, picking up where we left off before volunteering for the draft in mid-'68.  In order to succeed I thought, "I'll have to bury what happened deeply enough and deny it bothered me strongly enough to keep away the fear of being overwhelmed by it all."  I didn't know how to face it, I didn't know what had changed and didn't realize you can't go back in time.  All these things made readjustment back into society very confusing, frustrating and painful for all of us.

After thirty years of total failure meeting anyone's expectations, I reached the end of myself.  There were no more ideas of what might help with the worsening nighmares, angry outbursts, depression and guilt that were sufficating each and every day.  After I'd given up and was ready to leave my family in a last ditch attempt to stop the pain, I finally heard a small voice in my head saying, "OK, you've tried it your way, now do you want to try it my way?"  I believe it was the voice on God that I was unable to hear while trying my best to fix a broken life.  Only after the realization that I couldn't do it alone, could I then hear the voice of help.

It was like starting all over again but I didn't have anything else to loose.  I had failed in all my efforts.  From this humility, God picked me up and continues to guide me (sometimes kicking and screaming) into all that is good and right.  One of the first steps was to tell the complete story of what happened in the life of a low grade US soldier walking point through the jungels and rice paddies where anyone could suddenly become the enemy.

Not Enough Tears is the accumilation of all the fractured and tortured memories of my part in a far off war that tore our nation apart, and the difficulties in dealing with opposing realities of war and what is considered  a "normal" life back home.  I always knew but didn't consciously acknowledge that there was nothing I did or could have done that brought me home from Vietnam without a scratch.  I was no different than anyone else out in the jungle.  Fear was constant and adrenalin was peaked a majority of my 365 day tour.

Until it was all recorded, I didn't realize how many mericles God had performed so I could come home in one piece.  Others need to know the stories.  They are not mine alone.  They represent some of the same emotions all those in combat experience and can identify with.  Those coming home from Iraq and Aghanistan are going through the same dissillusionment.  I would have never believed it before going to Vietnam, but in the end, God can use all these things for our good.  Let Him help.

About the Author
Born in 1945, Dave Wright grew up in Northern California. He was drafted after dropping out of college in 1967. The Army taught him how to survive in our nation’s undeclared war in Vietnam. Thus began Dave’s transformation from innocence to hardened combat veteran. He received the Bronze and Silver Stars while walking point in the dense, steaming jungle. He completed college in 1973 with a degree in civil engineering and is finishing his career as City Engineer in Southern Oregon.

Surviving Vietnam, and burying its effects with denial, anger, and isolation meant Dave and his family suffered with PTSD for the next thirty years. He now speaks at high schools about his experiences and the slow process of recovery.

A good, honest, memoir.
By Mary L. Duren
I very much liked the author's description of his experiences "in-country" and I thought they were very honest.

I wanted to know more about his feelings, over the years after he came home, and how he dealt with them daily.

I thought it was an excellent memoir, most worthy of the sharing. I had a brother who served at the same time, in the same place. He would never speak of it, even to his death. But I recognized him as one of those described who "wanted to stay", and did...for 60 months.

From that I gained understanding that is a real blessing.

Take strength and courage
By Reader Views
Reviewed by David Peters for Reader Views (8/06)

Often called The War With No Purpose, the Vietnam War claimed many of our brave young men in ways than we can never imagine. Many of them survived the war only to come back to an ungrateful homeland, and continuing to fight a war that never ends, the war of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Most of us know someone suffering from this disorder, but they are too proud to show the fear in their eyes. It often gets the best of them at night, while the rest of the country is asleep. Dreams haunt them - walking through the jungles and rice paddies only to be ambushed, or hearing that often too familiar click of a bomb.

This is one man's tale of how God healed him through time. Under the encouragement of his wife, he began to write the stories that haunted him at night. Dave's healing has only begun with the writing of this profound book. I encourage anyone who has gone through any war, past or present, to read "Not Enough Tears." Take strength and courage in its words and begin to heal. "Not Enough Tears" is written from a Christian perspective, but people of any religion can equally gain from it.

Wife of 'Thor'
By Retiree
We purchased the book knowing that Dave had mentioned my husband in it and after receiving it, I asked 'Thor' if I could read it to him rather than he read it alone. And that's what we did . . . I cried in many places as I hopelessly tried to understand and make sense of what these men experienced during this highly unpopular war. Of course there is no way I could do that but hearing Dave's words (words that my dear husband cannot express himself) helped both of us to come together in a strange kind of mutual peace with it all. Dave Wright is a gifted, articulate writer who has captured the angst and internal turmoil that many Viet Nam veterans feel. He is a wonderful human being who although going through hell on earth emerges whole and grateful to his God for protection and personal spiritual growth. I highly recommend this book both to veterans and non-veterans alike. It will not disappoint.
