Needs Better Editing

So far I have only read the biology and chemistry sections and what they cover is a pretty good review. However, there are a lot of typos, some wrong information, and even missing information. For example, the biology section has no information on plants (except for sporophytes and gametophytes). There's even questions in the practice test at the end of the book where there is no information covered (What is the central metal ion in chlorophyll? No plant material in this book so this type of question wasn't covered). Despite this lack of completeness this book is extremely helpful. I have taken the DAT once already without using a book like this to study, and wasn't too happy with my score. After I finish studying with this book I know I'll feel more confident going into the test the 2nd time around.
If you purchase this book, you'll need to study some more info on the internet for completeness. I would recommend looking up plant info, enzymes (section they have is very brief)(, and embryonic cell divisions) (radial symmetry). Also heat curves in chemistry weren't covered in the text (there is a question on them in the practice test in the back).

Josephine & Napoleon Here I Come!

Planning to celebrate my 50th birthday in Paris and just found this book on the Internet (I loved their previous book regarding London). I was thrilled to see that I have read several of the books they recommend so the references were especially meaningful. I plan to start reading others on their recommendation list and then bring their guide with me when I go!

Barb and Polly are sisters and they "do Paris" on a shoestring budget which is right up my alley. They suggest many sights and experiences but always give you an idea of how much, how seedy, how "must-do" certain activities are. I like the perspective they give as two women traveling about because the trip to Paris I am planning is with two girlfriends from grade school!

I think if you are in a Book Club and are wondering what sort of theme you should have for the year... think about getting You Go Girl Paris, read several of the book recommendations and then head off en masse for a trip detailed for you by Ms. Chesley and Ms. Boline. It sounds absolutely fabulous.

Loved this guide!

I traveled to Paris with a group of girlfriends in early November and we absolutely loved this guide. We felt we would have missed so much without it. We all had read some of their book recommendations on Marie Antoinette and Josephine Bonaparte, beforehand which made all the difference for us. It helped us understand some of the history of France so we didn't feel so touristy when we visited the sights. We had many "aha" moments as we looked at many of the work displayed in the museums as we remembered what we had read.

All of the major sites are covered, plus many off the beaten path which we enjoyed and would not have known about without this book. We can't wait to go back!

Nothing New

I purchased this book because I thought it would give some insider tips on things to do/see that would be of interest to women. Unfortunately, it is basically a generic guidebook, that doesn't say anything new. It does have good info on what to see in the museums and divides it into where things are located, but you can get this from just about any other guidebook. The book looks like it was printed from someone's home computer, there are quite a few typos and the few pictures that are included are in black and white.

I was very disappointed, and wished I had spent the money on a different book. I will not be taking this book with me when I travel to Paris.

Highly Satisfied

I was a printer, both newspaper and commercial, for over 20 years and I found this book to be highly informative and educational. If you're interested in learning the professional way to create publications with InDesign CS3, then this book is for you. It builds on the basics, both publication and InDesign CS3, and works it's way from basic to producing advanced publications. It's easy to follow, has plenty of projects with student handouts and files, and will help you in building your publishing prowess. For me it was a great instructional tool and took me back down EMemory Lane from my printing years, if you get what I mean? Thanks for the trip, Terry!

Excellent learning for motivated users

I am a new learner to InDesign. This book is thorough, rigorous and well organized. I have many books on other software programs which I have used to teach myself those programs. This is the best work book I have used on any software program. As I neared the last chapters I was having a problem understanding one step. I emailed the author and she, Terry Rydberg, responded to me promptly and with great detail to answer my question. Don't skip the additional projects at the end of the chapters. These enforce what you have just been taught and really help this information stay in your brain so you know it rather than where you have to look it up. There are also very few errors in the book which is common place in workbooks on programs that have just released a new version. So if you are a serious learner of InDesign CS3 this is THE book for you.

I have used Terry's previous book when teaching InDesign CS2 and really love the update for CS3. This book has many great projects for helping you learn InDesign and makes teaching and learning InDesign a real pleasure.

125 pages, 8 week discussion series.

Christianity Today has compiled this 8 week study series about how faith and culture do and should intersect. Each of the eight week's sessions are set up with an article about the topic and a series of questions. The questions are divided into sections more appropriate for the beginning, middle, and end of the discussion. I was deeply impressed by the fact that the authors of the articles at no time prescribed how Christians are to interact with culture and media, instead they raised important questions and invite the readers to ponder these issues with them.

Overall I was deeply impressed with Faith and Pop Culture. Christianity Today selected excellent authors and articles that invite real thought and discussion throughout the 8 weeks. Reading through the questions and suggested small group activities, I thought that I might choose a slightly different approach or question from time to time. At the same time, the thoroughness of the questions would make it possible for less or in-experienced leaders to work through this with a small group. I found this study deeply interesting and would recommend it.

Faith & Pop Culture Review - Well Worth It

As a Christian man who enjoys literature, and who lives in a culture who enjoys sports, television, games, and movies, it only made sense to pick up the study series by Christianity Today called Faith and Pop Culture. The entirety of the book is focused on how Christians are to interact with the entertainment culture of today. Too often the Christian culture performs a predictable, and almost amusing, response to this modern reality. (1) There is the shock and horror reflex. (2) Outright condemnation and boycotting of the secular entertainment arts. (3)A bunch of muttering and isolation occurs, often coupled with (4) a stint with 100% Christian-made art forms (only Christian music, radio, books, jewelry). (5) Eventual compromise as the individual(s) become desensitized and tantalized by the wider world of entertainment (that honestly often far exceeds the talents of Christians alone). It does not have to be this way. While it is true that Christians are to be in the world but not of the world, it is also true that all truth can be used to portray God's truth, and thus the different forms of entertainment do have value. They are excellent venues of communication, and Christians should be excellent communicators because as Christ followers our lifelong employ is to communicate the love of Jesus and the truth of His salvation.

Christianity Today's Study Series Faith and Pop Culture was made recently, and therefore still very relevant to today. It's main focus, as the title portrays, is for a Bible Study or small group to discuss how their faith is to interact with pop culture. Every chapter contains a thought provoking article chosen from the Christianity Today magazine database. Once read there are options given for group discussion and reflection, often centered around pertinent Bible passages. Each chapter gives the group a chance to discuss the largest forms of entertainment today: movies, books, sports, television, and video games. There are also respective chapters dedicated to the value of 'family friendly' entertainment, Christian influence in the entertainment industry, and whether entertainment is compatible with a life of faith.

Before you delve into this study, however, I must give caution. Do not gather a group of Christian buddies together to merely glimpse through these pages and glance at the passages. Only open this book if you really mean it. The chapters will take more than one sitting each. The articles will require reading them ahead of time in order to process through them. The questions will take time to answer. The dedication will need to be high in order to truly grow from it and mold your thinking. This is partially because as Americans we come heavy laden with presuppositions and biases about entertainment. This group study is not meant to affirm and/or justify what you already believe. This group study is meant to challenge the way you think about entertainment. It is meant to be a commitment of time and effort. Please take this study, and as a group take it seriously, and be teachable. Take notes, write in the book, ask questions, be honest. I do wish the book provided more space for writing notes, but there are spaces between questions and the occasional blank page dedicated for notes.

I highly recommend this study. No Christian in Western culture lives in a bubble, therefore every American Christian will encounter the entertainment industry.

As a final aside, notice how I had to specify Christians in Western culture. The things Christians struggle with varies greatly from country to country. There are billions of people in the world who have no access, means, or even desire, to take advantage of the different forms of entertainment available. This book assumes you live in an American-like culture. As such, this book will make no sense to a Christian bedouin on the outskirts of the Arabian desert, or a Christian tribal leader in Papua New Guinea. Entertainment is a blessing and a curse for Americans, Europeans, and other developed countries who have it readily available. Not to say that different forms of entertainment are not available in non-Westernized cultures, nor that there is an absence struggle there. I simply wish the study series addressed the stark contrast of quality and quantity seen between the American entertainment industry compared to other parts of the world, and what this means to Christians. It would have made for an excellent concluding chapter.

Faith and Pop Culture...great way to learn the language of media

Have you ever found yourself in a conversation where you realized the other person did not speak the same language as you? Perhaps it was while traveling overseas, or in South Florida! Or, oddly, it might be while trying to explain Facebook and blogs to your grandmother or parents. There's no communication because the other person doesn't understand even the basics of the words you are using. In order to communicate, there has to be a shared language.

This is the premise of a small group study offered by Christianity Today called "Faith and Pop Culture." I was sent this book to review as part of the Thomas Nelson bloggers program, and spent several happy afternoons on my back porch soaking in the research, quotes, and thought-provoking questions. Just reading the chapter topics alone gives you an idea of the content and the direction of this study.

* Session 1: Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Monet, and ... Rocky? Are movies the art form of our day? And if so, how do they connect with Christian faith?
* Session 2: When Literature Leads us to God How can great books pave the road to faith?
* Session 3: Finding God in Sports Do we take sports seriously enough?
* Session 4: The Television Dilemma With hundreds of channels screaming for our attention, how do we decide what -- or whether -- to watch?
* Session 5: Cover your Eyes! Must all entertainment Christians enjoy be "family friendly?"
* Session 6: Jesus and Shot `Em Up Can violence be entertainment for Christians?
* Session 7: Hollywood Disciples Can Christians influence the entertainment industry?
* Session 8: Entertain me! It's the cry of our culture, but is it compatible with a life of faith?

The format of each session gives the group members a thought-provoking article to read before the meeting, and then ice breakers and discussion questions for the meetings. One thing I really appreciated about this series is the fact that the authors did not take the easy routes out of the sticky questions. While fully acknowledging theological issues, they also left room for legitimate discussions based on both sides of the cultural question. For instance, you will not find a quote in this book saying that Christians should never watch TV or a rated R movie. Instead, you're likely to find a set of questions that help you clarify your own opinions, as well as find new insights that you may have overlooked before.

The end result of this study, in my opinion, is teaching people who are -- let's face it, folks -- sometimes culturally illiterate Christians the "language" of the people we live with, our culture and our commuity. It gives you reasoned answers for discussions that center around spiritual themes in the culture, as well as inspiring examples of others who have used culture as a springboard for life change. But be prepared...there are very few easy answers here.

Fact-based decision-making has been emphasized in all business improvement methodologies, but never as much as in recent six sigma practices. However, it need not be highbrow statistics, which deters beginners, contend the authors of this book.

The authors have gone back to the basics of the Motorola practice by emphasizing six sigma's nonstatistical intent as a philosophy for breakthrough improvement. The title is catchy and makes one first surmise that one is totally freed from data. However, `virtually' is added in small letters to the title.

The evolution of six sigma has grown to include sophisticated tools of statistics, so much so that a beginner now equates six sigma with complex statistics. This acts as an impediment to the widespread adoption of six sigma as an improvement methodology.
In this context, the book seeks to bring into focus the basic intent of the tool for quick results.

The most important intent of six sigma as a philosophy, the authors rightly observe, is to enable an organization to channel corporate energy into continually creating value and intellectually engaging employees by challenging them for dramatic improvement. This is what Motorola's `six steps to six sigma' sought to do in its initial phase with resounding success. In later phases, dramatic improvements in the bottom line created a focus on lean, which the book does not touch upon.

The authors have attempted to express in simple language many quantitative expressions. The definition of six sigma is simplified to `an approach to achieve virtual perfection fast, and be the best-in-class in everything we do'. Six sigma performance is expressed as `designed tolerance divided by a process range greater than or equal to two', leaving how 3.4 parts per million is arrived at unexplained.

The method of project selection based on a project prioritisation index is explained in simple terms with examples. The DMAIC (define-measure-analyse-improve-control) sequence and its importance in systematic problem-solving is also rightly emphasised. The key DMAIC tools with least statistics are mapped on to the DMAIC sequence and a stat-free DMAIC tool application matrix is also a useful addition.

The simplified approach to comparative tests of means and variances is interesting for a beginner. However, it is an open question whether anybody at that stage can avoid looking to the t-table or f-table. The authors hasten to add a note saying: `For finer improvement in critical processes, more rigorous statistical tests must be performed.' However, describing only a `factorial experiment' and avoiding mention of the advantages of `fractional factorial experiments' leaves the beginner unaware of the possibility of saving on experimentation.

The link between six sigma and innovation is well explained and the skills of effective leadership of time management, process thinking, statistical thinking and innovative thinking are explained in simple terms.

The book, by and large, reaches its objective of `helping readers implement a six sigma initiative without fear of statistics, as well as refocusing energies to achieve the intent of six sigma, which is a lot of improvement very quickly'. But I would only recommend it for beginners and would-be champions. Regular practitioners may not accept its claim of enabling stat-free six sigma. It is, however, a commendable effort to demystify six sigma.

Very well written. It is a 'must have' for any one implementing 6Sigma. Even if you do not agree with the cocept of stats free 6 Sigma, you will still get some great insights in to the implentations of 6 Sigma by reading this book.

As an experienced Six Sigma Black Belt, I have successfully utilized most of the tools described in Stat Free Six Sigma. The true genius of this book, as written by Praveen Gupta and Arvin Sri, is that it emphasizes the importance of developing improvement project results - quickly, rather than proving the statistical integrity of the improvement process. How refreshing!

Although not completely free of statistical references, the book greatly simplifies the utilization of statistics. The abbreviated "significance tables" developed for "F" and "Chi Square" are extremely practical, easy to use and understand. Most of the statistical tools described are simplified and require no calculator or computer assisted calculations.

While training others to become "six sigma belts", I feel, as many of the trainees do, that explaining and justifying each statistical tool is time consuming and tends to increase "fallout" especially among non-technical people. Utilizing this "Stat Free" approach should significantly reduce training time and training cost, while increasing trainee retention.

As with other improvement project successes, this book has provided a true breakthrough for organizations planning on adopting Six Sigma improvement processes. This simpler approach should ease management fears of implementing a more traditional, statistically rigorous Six Sigma improvement initiative.

Stat Free Six Sigma has become my new Six Sigma "bible" that I strongly recommend to all "quick results oriented" business managers.
