Unique first-hand account of spirit communication.

The best thing about this book is the pure and simple way in which it is written. As the story unfolds in the first person view it catapults the reader into the mind of Alan, sharing both his frustration and joy as he seeks to communicate with his mother from the other side. Another even more unique aspect is that we are given a virtual tour of the transition from the physical body to the spiritual plane of existence.

Rather than being written as an author's conception of what life after death might be like, instead this book gives an exact first-hand account of what many people encounter after they die. Alan gets up close and personal as he shares all of his feelings and the difficulties he faced when he suddenly found himself "dead." Nothing is hidden or "sugar-coated" in this journey, everything is expressed in the most intimate detail. Humorous at times, it also shows that our personalities survive physical death and that an individual's views or opinions remain intact.

Many books about spirituality or life after death struggle to make a connection with the mind of the reader. After all, the ultimate goal of a book is to enable the reader to fully experience, feel, and relate to the events about which it is written. This book does a superb job of conveying the personal feelings and emotions of the writer to the person reading it. In addition, this story includes many references to our modern culture of technology and demonstrates how frequently attempts at communication by our loved ones can go unnoticed. The perseverance and determination of Alan to communicate with his mother is quite striking. Alan shares his frustration as he tries various techniques to communicate; yet he remains resilient until he ultimately succeeds.

Everywhere we turn we see books and television shows about ghosts, but the end result is usually the same: The answer to the ultimate question remains shrouded in mystery. In contrast, Alan's written recollection tells us what it's like to be a "ghost." He tells us of the different places that he travels to, the things he desires, and the changes that must finally come about in his personal journey towards understanding before he finally enters "heaven".

Anyone interested in learning how to communicate with their loved ones or understand how to become aware of the signs of communication will find this book an extremely valuable read. In cases where the grief of the loss of a loved one has taken its toll, this book has the ability to restore hope and strengthen the bond of love. Irrespective of our personal beliefs, everyone can come away a little bit richer from the experience of reading this book. As a communicator with spirit, I have found this book to be one of the purest that I have ever read - definitely considered a "must read."

A New Perspective

This is really a unique way of looking at and discussing what comes after this world. It's reassuring to read about the ways that our loved ones try to communicate with us and the signs they leave. It really opens one's eyes to signs that we might otherwise be missing.

The Bob Hurley profiled here isn't as well known to the average sports fan as his son, Bobby, the Duke University basketball superstar. But the elder Hurley's profile should rise quickly, thanks to sportswriter Wojnarowski's fine and detailed look at the "miracle" Hurley has achieved as coach for more than 30 years of the men's basketball team at St. Anthony's High School in Jersey City, NJ. Wojnarowski provides an excellent look at the phenomenon of the school itself, which Hurley and two Felician nuns managed to keep open even after it lost funding from the church, educating "the poorest of the poor" (more than 50% of the students' families lived below the poverty line). He delivers a finely etched portrait of Hurley, whose passion and drive enabled him to construct "a national powerhouse program out of an enrollment that struggled to stay at 200" and keep the school's decade-long streak of 100% college acceptance. But Wojnarowski's main focus is on the 2003-2004 season, in which a varsity team that Hurley considered "the most academically, athletically and socially underachieving in St. Anthony basketball history" overcame its "dysfunctional" nature and had an undefeated season. Wojnarowski's sensitive, insightful look at the social backgrounds and emotional development of the varsity players-and Hurley's remarkable understanding of them-will keep readers riveted throughout this book, which is one of the best recent pieces of sports journalism.

In 31 years as head basketball coach at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, New Jersey, Bob Hurley has won 22 state titles. One might expect St. Anthony to be a sprawling urban campus with thousands of students from which to cull elite basketball players. On the contrary, it's a tiny school, constantly on the edge of bankruptcy and held together by a determined band of Felician nuns. Nearly all of Hurley's players have attended college, many on basketball scholarships. New Jersey sportswriter Wojnarowski chronicles St. Anthony's 2003-04 season, which began with a group of players Hurley categorized as undermotivated and unfocused. They weren't for long. The season was a success, and the four seniors all accepted scholarships to Division I basketball programs. This inspiring account of good people making a difference one step at a time stands as a compelling counterpoint to Ian O'Connor's The Jump (p.1129), in which basketball talent is exploited at various levels for the profit of all but the player. I obtained access to Kaplan's website using the code, but could not get access to any of the online features.
Called the phone support line, it was out of service.
Sent an email which promised an answer within 48 hours, no response yet.

5 minute story

I have the DVD, small group work book and the hardback book. the DVD IS the first story of each chapter told by Lucado. Nothing more, nothing less. If you have the book, the dvd is not needed. I found that the DVD did NOT help prepare for the small group whatsoever. I was VERY disappointed in this study overall.

I would get the book with the small group study not the DVD pack. The book goes into more detail of what Lucado is trying to accomplish, although, it does not really help all that much for the work book (aka study for small group) either. It does mentally prepare your mind to think about John 3:16 and so helps focus your mind in that direction, which is more than the video does. My small group is considering dumping this study. We are in chapter 3 and we just are not impressed with it. The questions are abrupt, we can't find the focus of his point, and does not hold any of the group's interest (5 married couples).

NOT SATISFACTORY AT THE PRESENT TIME

I have purchased two Max Lacado John 3-16 Bible studies for Leaders for Bible Studies, and to date both sets have had a defective Leader Guide DVD, that will not play saying it is scratched or smudged. The second purchase is in the mail back to Amazon at the present time.

I am looking for a satisfactory resolution to my problem soon.
