Even with an MBA, many of these ideas were new to me. The author's easy, innovative writing allowed me to learn without the "labor pains" I've experienced in so many business books. But the greatest thing about The Woman's Advantage is that each business concept is presented through the story of one woman who started with nothing...implemented that idea...and now owns a multimillion dollar business.

Each chapter is like having lunch with a superstar woman entrepreneur and learning all her secrets! How cool is that?

Practical advice for business growth

In "The Woman's Advantage," Mary Cantando does an excellent job detailing how women can grow their businesses in today's crazy marketplace. She clearly articulates key strategies that entrepreneurs must embrace for maximum success in the least possible time.

The book's greatest strength can be found in the 20 stories of women entrepreneurs that illustrate each strategy. Their journeys to success are filled with golden nuggets of practical advice at the same time they're highly inspirational.

The info on WBE (Women's Business Enterprise) Certification is also extremely useful. It goes far beyond the actual steps, into how to leverage the certification to acquire new customers and drive incremental growth with existing ones.

Even though I've had my own company for nearly 20 years, I got a lot of new ideas I can use to take my own business to the next level. I don't say this often! In fact, right now I'm wondering why I didn't do some of these things 5 years ago.

Great Book

Strip Built Canoe by Randy Folsom is a fantastic book especially if you have never built a cedar strip canoe before. He effectively explains every step of building a canoe and of course, adds his own insight which improves upon conventional construction methods. Above all, one of the best features is the authors website which has a support email address allowing you to ask him questions if you need additional information. There are many books out there on this subject which I have read through but in my opinion this one has helped me out the best.

This is an average book for canoe building. It gets hard to follow in places and he seems to jump all over the place with the building process. But he does have some good tips and ideas that are different then other books I have read. I would also recommend Ted Moore's book on canoe building. It is easier to follow.

In my opinion strip built Canoe written by Randy Folsom is a well written book. I liked the content organization starts off from the basic areas and then dives into technical stuff as stripping, strip dimensions etc. I have built Canoe's for around 3 years now and the book brought out some great insights that were new to me as well. The illustrations are excellent as well. The language used by the author is simple enough to explain the technicalities very well. A Must Have Book

WOW! This book is spot on with understanding the plumbing business; ironically enough this book would help any future business owner in any form of business not just plumbing. The author, M. Scott Gregg, doesn't so much teach but inform. I didn't know what to expect when I purchased 'Profitable Plumbing' but I can tell you it far surpassed any expectation that I had.

The author couldn't be any closer to the truth when he stated the following:

"You must chase your mistakes before your mistakes chase you"
"Never, never, never lower the price for your job without taking something away from it!"

But the greatest recommendation in this book is when Gregg suggests reading the Book of Proverbs for your guidance with your business and life.

This book did more than the title suggested; it also opened my eyes to purpose of life...and that is helping others with a smile.

Buy this book before you start a company

I've been a licensed plumber in Harris county, Houston, Texas for just about 8 years. I performed my apprenticeship working for a large family owned plumbing company where I learned how to work service only. I have a little under a year left before I pursue my masters license and begin considering starting a company. At this position in my life, I'm looking for any and all information possible pertaining to running a successful business and increasing my profit for the company and myself.

I stumbled upon the authors YouTube channel where he has a series on Tankless Water Heater frequently asked questions. He appears very informed, educated, and unbiased, so I felt his knowledge would be worth the price of his book. I must say, that this is a very good "How to" book on running a successful business and increasing your value to yourself and your company. This book does not take a long time to read and it is very streamlined, which helps a large amount of those in our trade. There are many ideas in here I have not considered as far as getting your name/brand out to clients when you're first starting out on your own.

I am very satisfied with this book, and by purchasing a copy through the authors website, I received a signed copy. Highly recommended.

The author does a decent job of introducing basic concepts that any business should implement in order to gain the confidence of customers and earn repeat business. Some of the ideas appear to be obvious but my guess is very few trades people implement. Most of the core concepts could be summed up in a few short pages but again most trades people I know do not do what to many would be obvious.

Never Seen Anythng Like This!

Just when you thought there couldn't possibly be anything new in the world of ultra creative children's books, along comes Carl Warner and A World of Food: Discover Magical Lands Made of Things You Can Eat. Trust me, you've never seen anything like this before, and every member of your family, young or old, will be mesmerized by the photos in this book.

Mr. Warner works with food stylists to painstakingly arrange food into ridiculously spectacular landscapes, categorized by color. He uses a triangular table-top in his studio to photograph his scenes in layers, from the front to the back and then puts it all together into one cohesive unit in post-production. One of his greatest challenges is working faster than the rate at which the food wilts. It can take several days to get just one of these landscapes set up and photographed.

Inside this book, you'll find a green forest, red mountains, a pink candy land, a yellow desert and much more. Every single object in each picture is made from edibles, and you will love studying the pictures to identify every food in each picture - from mushrooms, bacon bits and pasta to broccoli, chocolate and lobsters. If you find yourselves stumped, you can look in the back of the book at a key, revealing all the details. Carl's expertise with lighting and photography really make his images extraordinary.

You and your children will be thoroughly entertained and inspired by the sheer creativity of this most imaginative book. Be warned, you will find yourself getting hungry as you read the book. A Favorite!

I borrowed this book for my 17 month old daughter from our local library, and it quickly became one of her favorites. Why? Warner is as good with words as he is with food. Yes, the pictures are ingenious and beautiful, but the text is equally engaging. My daughter will lay down and listen while I read it to her at nap time. She even fell asleep to its lyrical flow several times! Now we own a copy, and I couldn't be happier to have this book in her library.

Great for kids and teachers!

I bought this book for my 4 year old son, and he really enjoys it. It is one of my favorite books - definitely a treasure. Not only is it fun to look at, but there are several ways to use this to educate: talk about new (and mostly healthy!) foods, habitats, colors (the scenes are organized by colors), and rhyming words/poetry. There are some great vocabulary words in here for older kids, too. If you are a working on reading skills, this is a great book to have students make connections, make predictions about what kinds of foods will be used for each color, etc. It would also make a fun writing prompt - let kids pick a picture and write a story about the scene, or use it as inspiration for an art class. I used it today in a 1st grade reading class and the kids really loved it! There are so many fun ways to enjoy this book and to use it as a teaching tool or inspiration!

One of the best books of 2011

It is October, 1998. I am close to the end of the first semester of my senior year of college, just a few months away from beginning my student teaching experience and one month away from my 21st birthday. Early in the month, the news is dominated by the story of Matthew Shepard, a boy the same age as me, who has been tortured and left for dead in a field in Laramie, Wyoming. His crime? Being gay. On October 12, Matthew died in a hospital, unable to recover from his injuries. This crime haunted me then and still does today. How is it that human beings can be so cruel to one another? What drives someone to act out so violently just because someone else is different?

Reading the first pages of Lauren Myracle's Shine brought back all these emotions. The book begins with a newspaper clipping, "stunned residents of Black Creek, North Carolina, pray for seventeen-year-old Patrick Truman, beaten and left for dead outside the convenience store where he works." The article goes on to describe the abuse Patrick suffered, clearly the victim of a hate crime. All the emotions I felt in college hearing about Matthew Shepard came back at once. This introductory article would not be the last time this story brought me to tears, Patrick's story is agonizing and, unfortunately, very familiar.

Shine is narrated by Cat, one of Patrick's friends, who struggles with feelings of guilt for not having been a better friend and anger at the abuse he suffered not only the night he was beaten, but daily as he was the victim of school bullies. Unsatisfied with the attention the local police are giving this crime; Cat takes it upon herself to investigate and to bring justice to Patrick, who lies comatose in the hospital.

Myracle is a master story-teller with an uncanny insight into the human experience. None of her characters are stock, none are uncomplicated. Readers will recognize in the characters the complexity of the human experience. In flashback, Cat describes a particularly terrible instance of bullying that took place on the first day of high school. Patrick is pushed into the boy's bathroom and tormented by some of the school jocks. Instead of helping her friend, Cat turns a blind eye, afraid if she stands up for him, she will also become a victim. Those are the kinds of choices humans, whether teenagers or adults, are faced with every day. How many times have you turned a blind eye to something because it was easier than getting involved? We all know what the right thing to do is, but sometimes are unable to speak up for fear of drawing attention to ourselves. Through Cat's journey, readers will be inspired to take a stand and will be forced to evaluate their own actions towards others.

Equal attention is paid by Myracle to creating a cast of supporting characters who are every bit as human and imperfect as Cat. She brings to life the reality of living below the poverty line in the south. The school Cat attends is divided sharply down socio-economic lines. Patrick, as it turns out, is not the only one who has been the victim of bullying. Cat has also experienced torment, though she suffers her victimization silently, afraid of the ramifications of standing up to a rich and powerful family in the town. What would happen if her aunt, with whom she lives, is fired because she speaks up against her boss? Again, Myracle deftly illustrates the painful decisions we are faced with every day.

Beyond her mastery of characterization, Myracle is a master of words, able to paint beautiful or terrifying pictures with her words. Through her brilliant use of imagery, she is able to draw readers into the scene and set the mood. "Patrick's house was a ghost, dust coated the windows, the petunias in the flower boxes bowed their heads, and spiderwebs clotted the eaves of the porch. Once I might have marveled at the webs--how delicate they were, how intricate--but today I saw ghastly silk ropes." These first lines of chapter one paint a beautifully haunting picture and let readers feel the pain Cat is feeling--a house that once was beautiful and full of life is now empty and somber, symbolic of both Cat and Patrick. Myracle is indeed a master wordsmith.

To say Shine haunted me would be an understatement; I struggled to write this review hoping to do justice to the book. The story is both tragic and inspirational and is one that needs to be read. Parents, kids, teachers, everyone needs to read this book--the story is too important not to be heard. After reading Cat's tale, you will see the world differently, you will be different yourself. This may be the most important YA release of 2011.

Mixed Feelings

It's been awhile since I have read a book that I had such mixed feelings about. On one hand I love the setting and the premise, on the other hand I just couldn't get past some of the actions--or should I say inaction-- of the characters.

The plot is engrossing and it's hard to put this book down once you get started. But I did find it a little predictable. I had things figured out before Cat did, but that didn't make it boring. I was still interested to see how things would unfold. That's where things started to fall apart for me. The ending, to me was inexcusable. I don't want to say too much and give anything away, but I was disappointed. Sure, I've never been in that situation, but I don't think I could just...let it all go. Is that cryptic? You need to read the book to find out what I am talking about! I would really like to hear some other opinions on the end!

The setting is what I loved most about the book. It's very atmospheric. It takes place in this back woods southern town. I thought I lived in a back woods southern town, but it's nothing like the town in this novel. You can tell that Myracle has some experience with the bible belt, because she hits the nail on the head with the 'Bless his heart, but he had it coming' attitude. That is, unfortunately, how a lot of people are around here. It's sad, but true and Myracle really shines light on that.

Cat was a good main character. She did some things I would never do, but for the most part I liked her. My biggest problem with the book--even bigger than the ending--was what happen to Cat and how everyone just went on their merry way afterward. I guess that's realistic, sometimes bad things happen to people and we choose to ignore it, but I've never been good at that. I hold grudges and I get outraged on behalf of people. I was outraged for Cat. This whole situation, especially regarding Aunt Tilly felt a little unresolved for me at the end.

Sorry this review is full of vague thoughts. I don't want to give away too much, but I wanted to share what I have conflicting feeling about. I still recommend the book. It's definitely worth the read. I like when books leave me a little unsure of where I stand. If you do too, read it!

Irresponsible Book

The book is about the aftermath of an attack on a young gay man in a rural southern town. His former best friend decides the police aren't doing enough to find out who attacked him and so she sets out to figure it out herself. Interesting plot, okay execution, but something about this rubbed me the wrong way.

The author, in the end, seems to forgive a whole host of things; the attack itself, the rape of one of the characters (even refusing to call it rape), the way that many of the people in the town are addicted to meth. And part of me gets it; people are complicated, motivations are complicated, being high makes you do messed up stuff. But you also have to take responsibility for your actions. You can't blame attacking someone on being high, or rape someone because you're young and confused. I mean, seriously?? This is a book written by someone who writes for a teenage audience. How can you excuse something like that?

There is also hateful speech used throughout the book, almost excessively (and I am no prude when it comes to language) without any real counter to it. I get that people talk that way, but someone should also be calling them out on it. Or even put a freaking author's note at the end to talk about the language.

There are no resources provided in this book to teens who might be struggling with their sexuality, with sexual violence, or with addiction, which just makes me angry.Wwhy are you tackling these topics if you're not doing it to provide information, hope, resources? If it's just for a good story, then quite frankly your story needs to be better.

Excellent resource for busy pastors

As a bi-vocational minister, I find myself burning the candle at both ends many weeks. Working nearly full time while shepherding a congregation can take long hours away from family. This resource and its past volumes have been my constant companions for years. The outlines are extensive and laid out in such a way that you can truly make these messages your own. The themes in each volume naturally lend themselves to a series of messages that can be marketed as such in your church. If you take the time to thumb through the entire book after you get it, you'll find that you can organize other thematic series not even put together as such. There's also a number of helpful articles for your personal edification to read and enjoy. I've been reading these volumes since 2003 and cannot recommend them enough. With the new format, this resource lends itself to using it over a number of years rather than just one calendar year. Get it, keep it, and USE IT. I liked it so well, I also purchased a Kindle Version to use on my phone/tablet when I'm not in my study.

I was disappointed

I purchased other versions or editions of this same book in the past and found them all to be very helpful and they all included a cd copy of the book which was very helpful in sermon prep, but this one did not ... the material in the book is great but if you are going to use it for sermon help you will not be able to "cut & paste" portions of the book you like you will have retype it from this one

bad format

Bought this, having used the previous 10 years in a fantastic format. This is ridiculous. NOT user friendly. Nelson needs to GET BACK to the old format, which was tremendous, when Robert Morgan edited it.. disappointing. Looking at the one with OS Hawkins, and seems to be a "little" better, but STILL no scripture index in the back! Incredible.

A good prep book for Math 2c

I used the 2006-2007 version of this book to prepare for the SAT 2 math level 2. It gave me a comprehensive review of all the topics on the test. I really liked how they provided a summary table at the end of each chapter that summarized what was important on each unit.

To give you some numbers, my practice test scores were between 750~770. On the real thing, I ended up getting a 790. It proves that kaplan practice tests are a tiny bit harder than the actual test. So if you are looking for a good sat 2 math level 2 prep book, kaplan is a good, reasonable choice.

Although I have never used it, I also recommend princeton review's book. My friend, who used that book, took the test with me on the same date and came out with an 800. Considering the fact that he struggled in his math classes while I did not, I would say princeton review is also an excellent choice.

I do not recommend Barrons and Meilani's 15 "realistic" practice tests. Although they both boast how "realistic" their tests are, I found the barrons book replete with garbage you will not need to know for the test and meilani's test questions too hard. Only use these books when you think you really know what's on Kaplan's or Princeton Review's book.

I also strongly recommend you to take the test "after" you finish pre-calculus. I was doing well in my pre-calc class last year and so I decided to take the test on may, when we had still a bit more material to cover. Although it is a terrific score for a sophomore, considering that most people take the test during their junior or senior year, I could have done better if I had learned all my pre-calculus materials. This proves that it is not enough to just know what is in the book. You actually need to engage with all sorts of problems in your pre-calc class.

Excellent product! A well-organized book which is read in a pleasant way. It covers every aspect of the SAT Math 2 Subject Test and in a normal difficulty. I liked the structure of each chapter with diagnostic question, review of basic concepts, quizzes and summary of formulas.

By studying from this book and by checking on some official Collegeboard tests, I scored 800!
