I Held the Sun in My Hands: A Memoir, by Erika Jacoby

"I Held the Sun in My Hands" is the story of a young girl raised in a traditional Jewish family in Hungary prior to and during WWII. When Germany occupied Hungary on March 19th, 1944, Erika Jacoby was deported to Auschwitz, together with her mother. She was among the youngest that escaped the selection of Dr .Mengele and together with her mother, who was among the oldest, she endured and outlasted the atrocities and deprivations of the Nazi persecutors. In her book she describes how the teachings and values that she absorbed and incorporated into her life in her home helped her survive Auschwitz and the other concentration camps. She writes movingly about her painful disappointments in the behavior of her fellow human beings, while never losing her faith in God. This unshakable trust in the divine personal protection inspired others as well not to give up hope. In her memoir we witness how this young girl took upon herself the enormous responsibility for her mother's survival, and the impact of that on their relationship after the war and, indeed, throughout their lives. The author, a clinical social worker, examines this relationship with much insight and compassion. This book is a remarkable account of one person's resiliency, ability to cope with adversity and survive not only physically but also spiritually.

A Fascinating Memoir of a Holocaust Survivor
By Valerie Z.
I had the pleasure of having a Passover Seder at the home of the author, Erika Jacoby, when I was 12 years old. I'll never forget staring at the numbers branded on her arm. Nearly thirty years later, I first purchased her book for a friend. She said it was excellent; I then borrowed my father's copy and read it. I couldn't put it down. Different from Anne Frank's account as it takes you through her journey from being forced to give up the family home, her belongings, the separation of family members, moving in and out of different camps and being forced to work. All this while trying to keep both her and her mother alive. She writes about her return to the home that she was forced to flee and coming full circle with the aftermath. Not only will you not be able to put this book down but you won't soon forget this incredible story.

I held the sun in my hands: A Memoir: Purchased at Amazon.com
By dep
One of the best books written by a Holocaust survivor that I have read. Erika was one of many Hungarian Jews transported to Auschwitz in the spring of 1944. Her father was sent to forced labor. Her younger brother died in one of the camps right before the end of the war. Much of her family including her maternal grandparents were killed at Auschwitz. Erika and her mother survived Auschwitz along with a few cousins and other relatives. One of the things I liked the best about this book was that much of it was focused on Erika and her relationship with her Mother, both in the camps and after the war. It was so fascinating to see how in most ways Erika, although still a teenager, became the main support of her mother and how it changed their relationship so drastically after the war. A great read.
