Grade 4-8-As part of a project in which homeless children are given cameras and taught photography, four young people document their lives through their images and interviews with the author. The two girls live at a church mission in Santa Monica, California; one of the boys is still on the move, while the other's family currently lives in a house, but does not have enough money for electricity. What the four have in common is a poignant vision of the American dream-a house they can call a home, surrounded by a fence, with a playful dog in the yard. While their black-and-white photos are not of a professional caliber, they do capture the ambiance of their neighborhoods and living conditions. There are no statistics here, just youthful perspectives and observations. Because their insights are not overly brutal, this volume may be an appropriate introduction to the topic of homelessness. Pair this volume with Eve Bunting's Fly Away Home (Clarion, 1991) for an introduction to an increasingly pervasive topic.

Here he presents the stirring first-person narratives and photographs of four young people. Sarah Lewis, 10, and Christina Coito, 9, live at a mission church in Santa Monica, California. Lennie, 12, moves all the time with his family and has lived in their car, in parks, and in public buildings. Brian Heflin, 9, is no longer homeless, but his family can't afford electricity in their house. Hubbard doesn't make the common mistake of crowding too many stories into one book. The design is spacious and accessible, and the black-and-white photos of homeless people are powerful. However, the narrative voices all sound the same, and the photos are neither captioned nor attributed. Especially in a book that personalizes the "homeless" stereotype, we want to know who's who in the pictures, who took them, and where. Which one is Lennie? Who took the picture? It's the heartbreaking particulars that will grab kids, especially the dreams of shelter and privacy, the yearning to have a house someday "with a fence around it and a dog in the backyard." disappointing and somewhat inappropriate

I bought this book to discuss poverty with elementary students. The actual book is of poor quality- the typsetting is off, the photos look like they came off of someone's photocopier.
The stories are fine, but I cannot use this book for my students- principally because a photo on p. 33 shows a child making a rude hand gesture.
This book would be appropriate for students in grades middle school and above.

The book was short and to the point. It somewhat went into the lives of some of the children. It left me wanting to read far more than was given and I felt somewhat cheated but other than that the book was ok...

Same book as Kaplan SAT 2400. Slightly useful.

This textbook is EXACTLY the same book as that published by Kaplan with the title "Kaplan SAT 2400." Very strangely, the two books have different prices. Also odd: the 7th edition of that title is identical to the 2nd edition of this one.

As an SAT test prep tutor, I purchased this textbook in search of something challenging for my top students. What I've found is that the text has some value, though probably not as one's primary SAT prep guide. For that, I recommend "The Official SAT Study Guide, 2nd edition" from the College Board, blue book of past tests; since you can't get more real than the real ones (although the first three tests in that book are significantly more recent and subtly harder than the latter ones). "Tutor Ted's SAT Solutions Manual" is a great companion to that book, making it into a text, in effect, by giving detailed explanations for every question on those ten practice tests.

The Kaplan workbook does teach some techniques, although the highlighted tips are very annoying: Each one starts with the phrase, "An Advanced test taker ...." Yeah, we get it, already; an Advanced test taker does it the Kaplan way. Many of the tips are redundant and condescending. For example, in the lesson on types of questions in Critical Reading, the tip for EXCEPT/NOT questions is: "An Advanced test taker doesn't make careless mistakes on EXCEPT/NOT questions." That tip, like many in the book, is not worth a lot. For students seeking strong, basic strategies and test techniques, The Princeton Review's "Cracking the SAT" is better. For the Math section, go to Barron's separate "SAT Math Workbook."

What the Kaplan book does offer, is a collection of generally harder questions. Some of the questions are harder because they aren't well written, with answer choices that are faulty in one way or another - either the correct answer is not definitively supported by the text, or a wrong answer is equally legitimate. Some of the questions and passages feel awkward, not up to SAT standards. This would not be a good book to use without also experiencing the actual SAT questions since it not representative of the actual test. For high scoring students who want an extra resource, though, it is useful, and much better than "Barron's SAT 2400."

tough but excellent

This workbook is the exact one I was looking for for my daughter's SAT preparation. It contains effective math tactics including the 100 essential math concepts my daughter needs to know for test day, powerful critical reading strategies, step-by-step techniques for writing a high-scoring essay, and the toughest practice questions to build test speed and accuracy. It is comprised exclusively of the toughest material on the SAT and the strategies designed for cracking the tough stuff. The habits and thought processes of top test takers are highlighted throughout the book, as are favorite strategy tips. This book helped my daughter to master the questions that most people get wrong on the exam. My daughter likes this book very much. When she participates Beestar online SAT tests, she is ranked high in the honor roll. The Beestar ranking and statistics really help us understand the student's level. I'm very pleased with this book. Highly recommend.

Basic science workbook does the job, but only for kids new to science concepts

I gave this a 4 star because it is a good little workbook that nicely covers basic science concepts (including easy experiments) in a clear manner. However, by today's standards, it is debatable that this is for grade 1. We were teaching our preschool co-op of 4 year olds most of these things and even ran many of these experiments. The rest was covered in the early part of kindergarten.
Topics covered include telling the difference states of matter, density (float or sink), dissolving, changing objects (literally cutting paper or melting ice), position and motion of objects, light, 5 senses, and environments. It is very basic stuff. I discovered my kid is already most of the way through what is covered in grade 2 of this series, and she is still in kindergarten. So, in comparison to what is going on in the school system, the first two books are preschool and kindergarten level. But, in a more relaxed homeschool which did no science in preschool, this book might be appropriate for a 5-6 year old.

Before Micah came to St. Luc's, he knew how to beg, how to steal, and how to run from a beating. He did not know how to comb his hair, walk in line when he felt like running, or obey anyone's whim but his own. He was a stranger in a strange land. If it had been me, I would have found a way to disappear inside myself until the strangeness wore off.

Micah was not like me.

Henri has been living within abbey walls all his life, first in the care of nuns, then as a choirboy at St. Luc's, not far from Paris. He expects to spend the rest of his life there, copying books in the Scriptorium with the other brothers, and singing Mass in the great cathedral.

Then Micah arrives, a streetwise ragamuffin with the voice of an angel, saved from certain hanging to sing for God instead of coins. Micah comes like a fresh breeze into dead places, bringing exuberant joy at a time when Henri most needs it.

For the plague is coming, the grim reaper that will slash at the very roots of Henri's security. And neither Henri nor Micah nor anyone else in their world will ever be the same.

About the Author
Deborah Ellis was born in Northern Ontario but grew up in Paris, Ontario. Like many writers, she was a creative loner as a child, at odds with formal education in her youth, and a voracious reader at all times. As an adult, Deborah has been occupied with many issues of interest to women, such as peace, education and equality in society at home and abroad. She works at a group home for women in Toronto, reading and writing in her spare time. In 2006 Deborah was named to the Order of Ontario.

A Company of Fools

I really loved this book. It takes place in Paris, in an Abbey, where all the monks and choirboys live. There's the teacher's pet, Henri, who is a goody-two shoes. He's 12, like me, and one day he meets Micah, a criminal of the same age who has the voice of an angel. They become friends, and they do things that Henri would never have dreamed of doing if he weren't with Micah: spying on the monks, mixing a horrible tasting powder in the communion wine, etc. They become the Company of Fools, to make people laugh and have joy with the Plague all around them. It's really a very good book. Recommended ages: 12 and up
